 Aroostook
A river which rises in Piscataquis County, Maine, and meanders in a generally northeasterly direction through much of the northern tip of the state before entering the Canadian province of New Brunswick and joining the Saint John River.
Aroostook reached the Washington Navy Yard on 1 September and spent the remainder of that month operating on the Potomac, bolstering the defensive forces of the National Capital which was then threatened by General Lee's troops who had recently defeated Pope's army and crossed the Potomac into Maryland.
Aroostook soon returned to Hong Kong and turned her attention to operations against pirates along the coast of China.

Mitchell Center Funded Research - Nutrient cycling within the Meduxnekeag River and the use of periphytic algae
A 20-mile segment of the Meduxnekeag River in Aroostook County, Maine, that traverses Houlton Band of Maliseet Indian (HBMI) tribal lands is experiencing substantial filamentous algal blooms in summer months.
We propose to evaluate the underlying cause of the eutrophication by compiling and analyzing the existing data, investigating nutrient cycling in the river (including sediment and the water column), identifying nutrient loading areas and relative contributions of point and non-point sources, and determining temporal and spatial changes in the algae.
A 6-mile segment of the river downstream of Houlton is listed on the state’s 303d and 305b list for non-attainment of water quality standards because of high nutrient loads and low DO levels.

 The Aroostook War
Aroostook was named for its most prominent river, and is derived from a native Wabanaki word, sometimes spelled Restook, Ristook, Aroostic, and finally, Aroostook.
The first confirmed settlement of the Aroostook by Europeans was in June of 1785, when Joseph Daigle settled on the south bank of the St. John River, below the mouth of the Madawaska River, not far from the present Catholic church of St. David.
Upon completion of this, intended to be an early history of Aroostook County, I will endeavor to assemble a separate history of the Micmacs and of the Maliseets who lived here first, and who still reside in the area.

His property was bounded by the Wallagrass stream, the Fish River, and the " Main Road." This road, now Maine Route 11, became known as "the Military Road" and it was improved solely to expedite the arrival of American troops to the Aroostook frontier.

To assert a hold on the territory, in 1832 the US government completed the construction of a military road between Bangor and Houlton in order to rapidly move troops and ship military supplies to northern Maine in case of border friction.
At the same time the State of Maine began encouraging settlement, homesteading, and logging in the Aroostook region to stem the massive tide of Yankee emigration from the state towards the prairie lands on the western American frontier.
To achieve these objectives, the state constructed a road connecting Houlton in north-central Maine to the Aroostook River in the northwest in 1832, followed by a second road reaching the Madawaska settlement in 1836.

Since Aroostook County had a total population of 9,413, the Madawaska settlements represented 37 percent of the county's population.
This area was included in the US census because at that time the whole area of northern Aroostook County as well as much of what is today western Madawaska County (at that time part of Carleton County), New Brunswick, was disputed between Great Britain (New Brunswick was a British colony) and the United States.
The dispute was finally settled with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which established the St.John River and the St. Francis River as the final border.
