It is worth making the 40km/25mi trip eastwards from Vila de Feira to Arouca along narrow roads leading through lonely mountain countryside.
The convent at Arouca was founded in the 10th century, but the present buildings are 17th and 18th century.

The main attraction of the town of Arouca, lying in a green valley, is the great Mosteiro de Arouca.
The history of this monastery is linked to princess Mafalda (born in 1195) who became betrothed to the teenage prince Henry of Castile: when he died in an accident, Mafalda took the veil in Arouca, became patroness of the convent (now Cistercian) and her wealth and devotion made it very influential.
But it is the wonderful fertility of the valley of Arouca, with its orchards and vineyards and vegetable plots, which never ceases to surprise the visitor.

A vila é bastante antiga, provavelmente edificada pelos galo-celtas, quatro ou cinco séculos a.C. Uma cidade romana, de nome Arouca, Aruca, ou Areduta, foi aqui erguida por César Augusto em 34 a.C., tendo existido até 716, data após a qual foi destruída pelos muçulmanos.
