Around the World in 80 Days DVD Review
Computer-animated worlds sometimes act as a transitioning map, a location and day number occassionally remind us where we are (always in a different font), and fast-paced editing and zooms given this "Before the Turn of the Century" (though the century is not specified) piece a much modern look than its setting would merit.
Though the late-19th century setting of Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days is an important character (and perhaps the most important one), the book has a kind of timeless, universal appeal that made a film version in the '50s relevant and entertaining and could make a new adaptation feel the same.

I didn't expect much (well, anything, really) from the new remake of "Around the World in 80 Days." So I was surprised to find that it's an action movie, a pretty funny one, its virtually non-stop donnybrooks giddily orchestrated by the still-inimitable Jackie Chan.

The new movie has the estimable Jackie Chan in the co-starring role of Passepartout, and he brings considerable energy to the part; but the old movie boasted Cantinflas, Mexico's most-popular comedian, as Passepartout, and it had David Niven in the lead role of Phileas Fogg.

For 'Around the World in 80 Days' bears little resemblance to either of them.
It's got some holes in the plot, it's a little overly-cartoony in places, and it sometimes feels a bit rushed (80 days are, after all, a heckuva lot to squeeze into two hours) - but I had a better time at this one than I've had at many of this year's releases.
