The final phase, "Resolution" takes place as the body returns to its normal state (the pulse and breathing rate return to normal, and other body changes that took place return to their pre-excitement state).

In a preliminary study, phase shifts to arousal by gentle handling were significantly potentiated by the cortisol synthesis inhibitor metyrapone, suggesting that stress-related cortisol release may inhibit phase shifts to arousal.
The results indicate that large phase shifts associated with arousal in the usual sleep period are neither induced nor prevented by stress per se, but are dependent on the expression of at least low levels of locomotor activity.

The DSM-IV focuses entirely on physical indices of arousal, described as a lubrication-swelling response, while it is often the lack of subjective arousal, lack of desire, orgasm difficulties, or sexual pain which lead women to seek treatment.
This problem in diagnosing female arousal disorder is related to the lack of specificity as to what exactly constitutes a normal sexual arousal phase.
Women vary greatly in the ease and latency of sexual arousal, and in the kind of sexual stimulation that is adequate for sexual arousal to occur (Leiblum, 1998).

provided a simplified formulation of the neuropharmacology of normal human sexual response: the initial phase is libido, or desire, linked to satisfaction with sex; the second phase is arousal of genital tissues, resulting in erections in men and genital lubrication and swelling in women; and the final phase is orgasm, accompanied by ejaculation in men.
Men may be more likely in general to have a disorder of arousal (erectile dysfunction or impotence), whereas women may be more likely in general to have a disorder of libido (lack of sexual desire or satisfaction).

Arousal Phase- After you encounter the stressor, a message is then sent throughout your body that you have encountered a demand or threat (Phase 1).
This phase is often termed the Fight or Flight Response and is automatically triggered in our bodies when we perceive a threat or a stressor.
Since this arousal state is persistent, one never reaches the recovery and resolution phase, and consequently, mental, emotional, physical, behavioral and social problems develop.

Many current research studies and treatment therapies focus on disorders of either the Desire or Arousal phase of the female sexual response.
Arousal Disorder: Arousal occurs during the “excitement phase” of the sexual response cycle, it involves increased blood flow to the genital area, pleasant body sensations, vaginal lubrication and swelling, and other physical body responses to sexual stimulation.
This category of sexual dysfunction is currently the subject of intense research, with medication for the disorder being used in clinical trials.
