Organ playing in Arp Schnitger's time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In Germany in Schnitger's time the organist's task was to play intonations before the liturgical singing, to play alternatim with congregational singing, and to play after the service.
Schnitger's activity in the Netherlands thus coincides with a process of accepting organ music in the liturgy.
This makes it questionable whether Schnitger organs in the Netherlands were in fact used to accompany congregational singing; perhaps the organs had primarily a soloist function.

The Arp Schnitger Organ of Neuenfelde
Arp Schnitger, who was born in 1648 as a son of a carpenters family near Bremen, has built more than 100 new instruments in Germany and the Netherlands, delivering single instruments even to England, Russia, Spain, Portugal and Brazil.
Schnitger came from the Weser Marshlands in Oldenburg County where he was at first apprenticed as a carpenter to his father.
Schnitger was not only closely connected to the village of Neuenfelde as the location of his subsequent workshop, but also through his first wife, Gertrud Otte, whom he married in 1684.

However, the organ that proved to be the most fascinating and rewarding was the scarcely less-renowned organ by Arp Schnitger's son, Franz Caspar Schnitger, built in 1722-5 in the Laurenskerk Alkmaar (and retaining the case and some pipes from the previous van Haagerbeer organ).
Schnitger's version of this delicacy is clear in his instrumental imitations and in his echo effects.
In Arp Schnitger's organs it can be used as a glockenspiel on top of a flute chorus or to spice up a reed solo, but it has usually been assumed that such stops have no role in the tutti.

 17th Century Germany: Arp Schnitger
Most scholars and scholarly organists agree that the most important organ builder of northern Germany during the seventeenth century was Arp Schnitger.
Schnitger, who spelled his name in various ways at different times of his life, lived from 1648 until 1719 and was active in both the Netherlands and in northern Germany as an independent builder working from the 1680's until his death.
Even Schnitger used different approaches at different times, in part because buildings and materials presented different musical needs, in part because throughout his lifetime he adapted to the needs around him.

The Arp Schnitger organ in the Cathedral of Mariana, probably built between 1700 and 1710, has been recognized since the 1970s as an excepcional instrument.
This renewed interest led to further research into its history and origin, which confirmed that it was an output of the school of North German organ builders, more precisely an instrument built by Arp Schnitger.
Given to the fact that most of the Schnitger organs have been restored, as well as many other instruments from the North German school, the restoration of the Mariana organ has the backing of a large volume of an accumulated knowledge in the international community.
