Elo rating. Who is Elo rating? What is Elo rating? Where is Elo rating? Definition of Elo rating. Meaning of Elo ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Elo was a master-level chess player and an active participant in the United States Chess Federation from its founding in 1939.
Elo's central assumption was that the chess "performance" of any given player in any given game would be a hypothetical normally distributed random variable, with a mean value that represented the player's true skill, and would change only slowly.
Elo suggested scaling ratings so that a difference of 200 rating points would mean that the stronger player has an expected score of approximately 0.75, and the USCF initially aimed for an average club player to have a rating of 1500.

ELO rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ELO rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess and Go.
ELO is often written in capital letters, but is not an acronym.
ELO ranking for games without the possibility of draws (Go, Backgammon) is discussed in Go rating with ELO.

ChessBase.com - Chess News - The Sonas Rating Formula — Better than Elo?
Elo's complicated table of numbers should be discarded, in favor of a simple linear model where White has a 100% expected score with a 390-point (or more) rating advantage, and a 0% expected score with a 460-point (or more) rating disadvantage.
I have a theory about where Elo's calculations may have gone astray (having to do with the uncertainty of rating estimates), but the relevant point is that there is considerable room for improvement in Elo's formula.
In the case of the Elo ratings, this numerical constant is the attenuation factor, or "K-Factor".

Elo was a strong chess player (two draws against Rueben Fine!) and a physicist.
Young Arpad learnt chess at the age of ten, and the game became one of his many lifetime hobbies (including wine-making, horticulture, astronomy and music).
Elo's formula assumed that the performance of a player is normally distributed.

 Backgammon Ratings
Elo's concept was straightforward -- quite unlike the complex math it involves: humans have good days and bad, and their performances in a given situation will fluctuate accordingly.
Elo combined the principles of standard deviation and normal distribution (familiar to any insurance company) with his numerical interval scale to develop a system by which many performances of an individual would be normally distributed.
This "K-coefficient" (as Elo describes it) can be used to accerlerate improving players to their proper location in the rating field, while a lower "K" would be used for older or better-established players.

Sun.Star Cebu - Pestaño: Elo ratings
ELO is not an abbreviation like Fide or RP, but is actually the name of a person, Arpad Elo (1903-1992), a Hungarian-born American physics professor, who developed a rating system for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess.
Elo’s central assumption was that the performance of each player in each game is a normally distributed random variable.
Elo thought of the mean of a player’s random variable as that player’s true skill.

The Elo rating system, designed by Arpad Elo in 1959, has applications not just to chess, but to ping pong, golf, tennis, soccer, and even the major American sports, where gamblers are always looking for an edge in the odds.
The Elo ratings are also used on internet chess servers, in scholastic chess, and of course in FIDE (the international chess federation), who uses it to seed international tournaments and to determine who gets to compete for the world championship.
Before the Elo system, flawed rating systems were creating chaos, and before that, general consensus in the chess world determined who held the world championship: the challenger usually had to have some tournament victories under his belt to earn a shot at the title.

Elo's historical rating calculations were clearly an incredible accomplishment, especially considering the lack of computational power available to him more than two decades ago.
Elo's historical calculations and graphs are simply too coarse to be of any real use, and even the official FIDE ratings are of limited availability in the 1970's.
Unfortunately, the Elo scale itself doesn't have any safeguards built in to prevent rating inflation/deflation, and it is clear that the meaning of a 2700 rating (for instance) is different if you are talking about 1971 versus 2001.

Chess is different from a number of sports in that the only objective information that can be drawn from a game is who won; basketball, football, hockey, etc provide additional information in the form of scores and other statistics.
The Elo system says we can predict a team's probability of winning, and that a team that is more likely to win than its rating suggests should have its rating increased.
Presumably, then, if we had predicted that the former team has a 60% chance of winning, it would not be unreasonable to lower somewhat our estimate of that team based on new data suggesting that the teams are more evenly matched.
