  Arpeggione
The Arpeggione can be the ideal choice for the main speaker in a home theater system if musicality is your most important criterion.
It is quite difficult, for a floorstanding speaker of this price, to have at the same time a lot of puff and to be graceful, to have sharp eyes and the litheness of a gymnast.
The Arpeggione, however, rest on solid foundations (the bass is rich and well-defined) which allow a very elegant and natural harmonic punctuation.

Arpeggione - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The arpeggione is a six-stringed musical instrument, fretted and tuned like a guitar, but bowed like a cello, and thus similar to the bass viola da gamba.
The only notable piece extant for the instrument is a sonata with piano accompaniment by Franz Schubert, D821, not actually published until 1871, when the arpeggione was long defunct; this is now more commonly played on a cello, viola, or other medium-ranged instruments, though the piece is often played on the double bass as well.
Arpeggione is also the name for a noted contemporary French string quartet, Quatuor Arpeggione (de Paris).

Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata Revisited - THE ARPEGGIONE
In the case of the arpeggione, Staufer's miscalculation was twofold, both of mechanics and aesthetics.
Like the viola da gamba3 and other fretted stringed instruments with more than four strings, the arpeggione was a delicate instrument, whose bridge curvature was very slight, making it difficult to apply pressure on a single string without touching off adjacent strings.
The fretted members of the string family (such as the viola da gamba) were regarded as musical archaisms5 in the 18th century and were long out of fashion by the early 19th century6.

Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata Revisited - INTRODUCTION
The arpeggione, or bowed guitar, is exactly that: a fretted instrument with six strings tuned exactly like a classical guitar [E-A-D-G-B-E] and held vertically between the knees.
The similarity to the tuning of the double bass is inescapable, however, due to the use of solo tuning strings, any advantage that this conveys—whether technical or musical—is undone when the piece is played in written G-minor.
To this end, we will examine the strange phenomenon of the arpeggione itself, the composer and the circumstances under which he composed the sonata, existing editions for the double bass, and finally, the musical and technical implications that our edition presents.
