South African Military History Society - Journal- THE SINKING OF THE SS MENDI, 21 FEBRUARY 1917
Most of the SANLC members who died in France are buried at the British military cemetery at Arques-la-Bataille and most of those who died with the Mendi are remembered at the Hollybrook Memorial 'for those who have no grave but the sea' in Southhampton, England.
It is said that a large number of SANLC men performed one last (barefooted) dance on the tilting deck of the Mendi before she plunged beneath the ocean surface and took the 'death-dancers' with her to the depths.
Considering the magnitude of the disaster which engulfed the Mendi, and the interest displayed in the subject by many black visitors, it has probably not been adequately represented at the museum in the past, having received but a mention and a photograph in the museum's naval display.

 Arques (Municipality, Pas-de-Calais, France)
There are other places named Arques in France, for instance in Languedoc (with a former Cathar castle), in Rouergue and in Normandy (Arques-la-Bataille, named after the victory of Henri IV over the duke of Mayenne in 1589).
Arques was in the past an important river port, located on the junction of the river Aa (highly estimated by the French crossworld-puzzle enthusiasts, along with the lake of Oo and the cities of Eu and Is) and the canal of Neuffossée, which links the Aa to the Lys (Leie in Belgian Flanders).
The flag of Arques, as confirmed to Pascal Vagnat by the PR department of the municipality, is white with the municipal logotype.
