Newmarket, Ont. (1 December, 2003) – Inspectors from the Ontario SPCA removed, on veterinary recommendation, 63 dogs, 6 cats and 7 chickens from a property in the Township of Arran-Elderslie in Bruce County, where they were being kept in what has been described as appalling conditions.
All of the dogs were taken to the Ontario SPCA Centre in Newmarket where they will be examined in the Centre’s veterinary hospital, and receive treatment and care.
Under amendments made to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in 2002, breeders of dogs or cats for sale face fines up to $60,000 and up to two years in jail for failing to meet acceptable standards of care for their animals.

Chris Stockwell told the Ontario legislature that the ministry was informed by a whistle-blower on May 23 that a lab in London was not adequately testing for E. coli in drinking water for 67 cities and towns, mostly in the southwestern part of the province.
Both the Ontario Liberals and New Democrats accuse the province's Conservative government of failing to protect drinking water for a second time.
