Arranmore Island (Árainn Mhór in Irish) is the largest inhabited island in County Donegal, and the second largest in all of Ireland, with a population of around 550.
With no less than seven pubs, Arranmore is a pub crawler's dream.
Given that there is no permament Garda Siochana presence on the island, the pubs are usually lax in adhering to closing times, if at all.

Although Arranmore has never been renowned for its mathematical exactness, locals estimate that as many as 160 men, out of a total population of 596 at the latest official count, have worked on the Jubilee Line over the past three and a half years.
Arranmore men dug one of the first Scottish hydro-electric plants in the mid-1920s, the Queens and Brooklyn tunnels under New York's East River in the 1930s and '40s, colliery shafts throughout northern England, London Underground's Victoria Line.
There the Arranmore men worked ahead of a giant boring machine, creating the chambers into which it could fit and the ventilation shafts without which no work could be carried out.

It relies mostly on tourism and fishing for its income, as well as the traditional Gaeltacht summer schools, but in recent years, a local development co-op has encouraged the development of other industries on the island, such as a call centre and teacher training for Irish teachers.

 Arranmore
Twenty-seven residents of Arranmore along with fifty Chicago transplants and relatives arrived on Beaver Island after a very "brisk" trip on the motorship "Emerald Isle"; oops, I should say that fifty of them missed the boat (luckily) and had to be flown over because their bus was late.
Several of the Arranmore people got their cameras out and took snapshots as we passed the lighthouse and arrived at Paradise Bay.
After the museums and Jerry's it was time for the "twinning" ceremony, which was switched from the point to the (very) recently named "Arranmore Park," which is on the site of the power plant overlooking the bay that was torn down this year.

 Beaver Island Arranmore Twinning Information Site
The one thing that stands out in my mind was the oft comment by the Arranmore people at the hospitality of Beaver Island in hosting the original event on Beaver and how they could never repay the people there.
The memorial at the lake on Arranmore is a tremendous structure which has a Beaver and an Otter facing each other with a Trout/Salmon between them symbolizing the unity we both share.
All of the school children were down for the greeting and practically everyone able to squeeze onto the pierhead.

A night that began with thoughts of home and reunion with family turned into disaster as nineteen Arranmore men women and young people, some in their teens, were drowned.

Arranmore's Toucan Cove debut is a fifteen year retrospective that reflects the group's roots as a Chicago Irish pub band and reflects the broader horizons they've embraced over the years, with pop and country sounds joining pub favorites like "South Side Irish" on their set lists.
The seventeen tracks seem generous at first, but they're all needed to capture a picture of the multi-dimensional sound of the band through its various incarnations over the course of a decade and a half.

A CONSTRUCTION worker who was buried under three tonnes of earth in a building site accident off the Dock Road on Friday afternoon has died of his injuries.
The deceased, who has been named as 25-year-old Sean McGowan, was a native of Arranmore Island off the Donegal coast.
Arranmore priest Fr Martin Timoney, described the accident as "horrific."
