It is used for initiation ceremonies, and a sign erected by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Service asks walkers on the trail to respect the Arrente's veneration for the site by not swimming there.
There are other similar signs along the Larapinta, and at some places the Arrente, who work closely with the Parks service, have placed their own signs that tell the dreaming stories associated with that part of the country, or such parts of the stories as can be revealed to the non-initiated.

He was born in 1936 of the Arrente people at the Television Station Aboriginal Reserve in the Northern Territory.
At age 10 he was taken from his tribal lands and his family—although in these circumstances his family was willing—to the St Frances children's home in Adelaide, where attempts were made to rob him of his Aboriginal culture and heritage.
