  Alternative hip hop
Arrested Development's focus on peace and love and groovy beats made them relatively accessible, though their devout Christianity (reflected in the lyrics) also made them unattractive to some audiences.
Alternative hip hop generally refers to a specific style of hip hop that is opposed to the mainstream sounds of gangsta rap.
However, certain other hip hop genres are also alternative and are sometimes referred to with the same term, including a mixture of heavy metal, hard rock and hip hop that would eventually come to be known as rapcore, and a mixture of 1970s-style soul music and hip hop called nu soul.

Arrested Development had already been offered a single deal for the song "Tennessee".
The group then recorded the epic "Revolution", which appeared on the oldies-dominated soundtrack for the film, as well as the second half of its closing credits when the film was released in 1992.

Often, hip hop's blatant excess is rationalized with, "We came from nothing." That statement rings hollow given even a little bit of context.

What distinguishes Arrested Development from other rap groups is their positive, family-oriented themes, a welcome departure from the misogynistic and violent lyrics of controversial hard-core rap acts.
In Arrested Development's roller-coaster ride to stardom as a trendsetting rap group, there have been several peaks: two Grammys and Soul Train Music, MTV and NAACP Image awards, plus a million-selling Unplugged album (a live, acoustic version of their debut (album) featuring 17 musicians from Brazil and the Caribbean.
Arrested Development was started in 1988 by Speech and Headliner (born Tim Barnwell), the band's self-described "turntable instrumentalist," while they were both students at Atlanta's Art Institute.

Though Arrested Development and the Fugees managed to cross over into the mainstream, most alternative rap groups are embraced primarily by alternative rock fans, not hip-hop or pop audiences.
The fathers of the genre, 2 Live Crew, were one of the leading groups of the groove-heavy Miami bass sound, and that bass-driven groove remained at the foundation of dirty rap.
The cerebral Arrested Development was the first to hit the national scene in 1992, and they were followed a few years later by protégés of the harder-edged Organized Noize production squad, most notably OutKast and Goodie Mob.

Arrested Development is a character-driven comedy television series about a formerly wealthy, habitually dysfunctional family.
Arrested Development uses several elements that are rare for American live-action sitcoms.
For example, Arrested Development often alludes to the past work of its cast and crew through the restaging of familiar scenarios, such as Barry Zuckerkorn's jumping the shark from the Happy Days, and by casting former collaborators in small bit parts, including many cast members from Mr.

Ironically, it is "hip-hop" that is arrested, conceding the fact that it was not via the strident Black nationalist tomes of "conscious" rappers that hip-hop experienced increased scrutiny from law enforcement.
It remains to be seen whether this moment of hip-hop nostalgia will translate into the increased integrity of the art form (I hold out little hope for the integrity of the industry) and the development of institutional forces to address of the myriad of issues that hip-hop's graying public is beginning to acknowledge.

Called simply The Hip Hop Box, it traces the style from 1979’s “Rapper’s Delight” up to modern stars like 50 Cent, 2Pac, and a Dr. Dre-Snoop Dogg duet -- though the latter artists are represented by album tracks rather than their hits, and are not shown at their best.
Until I listened through the Hip Hop Box, I had never taken the time to trace the development of the genre, or to sort out which artists appealed to me personally.
For example, by the early 1990s groups like Arrested Development were making socially conscious cuts like “Tennessee,” which uses live musicians, melodic choruses, and gospel harmonies along with the mixing and rap.

In some ways the Fugees are a lot like Arrested Development, because of the mental messages that come across in their music.
Arrested Development means "to stop developing" (meaning that appears to be the state of mind we as African-Americans are in), and the Fugees (which is short for refugee) symbolizes the refuge that we seek in our minds.

Though the largest number of graffiti practitioners are still young teens who simply write a chosen "tag," or nickname, in spray paint, marker or other media, a small number of those go on to paint large, ambitious, multi-color murals based on a highly stylized design of their tag.
Like graffiti, rap (sometimes itself referred to as hip hop) and break dancing are art forms developed by a multicultural array of urban young people in the seventies and early eighties, and still practiced, in varying degrees, today.
This practice occurs both on the individual level, when a writer or crew paints a mural along the wall of a warehouse next to a rail yard, and at the level of the subculture, when a space like the Phun Phactory is claimed as a space for graffiti and graffiti artists.

The Subterraneanz' saga began with the crew's original core, then known as the Exile Society -- lyricists Bezi, LCJ, Tranque, and Hypno -- growing up with hip hop in the Boston area (Roxbury, to be precise) in the mid-'80s, practicing the fine arts of grafitti, breaking, and rapping.
After moving to Oakland, California in '95, the Exile Society began the first of what would be a succession of European tours as support for the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, the Sugarhill Gang, and the The Pharcyde.
The addition of Djas in particular brings the band's innate soul to the surface of their knockin', drum-heavy groove, reminiscent of the phat-beats-and-harmony steelo of groups like the Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, and down-for-my-dogs divas like Mary J. Blige.
