Aero 13 - Runway Arresting Systems
Arresting cables span the runway surface and are engaged by the aircraft arresting gear hook (
Because most arresting cables are 1 to 1 1/4 in (2.5 to 3.2 cm) in diameter and suspended by rubber donuts 6 in (15.2 cm) in diameter, nosegear deflectors are at risk of being damaged if a donut is struck.
The key to dealing with the presence of arresting cables on runways is coordination among the airline operator, the airport operator, and the agency having control of the arresting system.

 Encyclopedia: Arresting hook
The cables allow CTOL aircraft to land safely on the short runway by connecting with a hook attached to the aircraft.
When caught, the wire takes up the slack before pulling taut, bring the aeroplane to a dead stop.

When the U-2 Went to Sea
Its slow approach speed made arrested landings relatively easy, with the carrier's arresting cables kept at their lowest setting.
It gave them stronger landing gear, an arresting hook, and wing "spoilers" capable of canceling aerodynamic lift when the aircraft came over the deck.
The Navy gave several U-2As stronger landing gear, an arresting hook, and spoilers.

On approach, an aircraft's arresting hook engages one of a series of cables on the flight deck, causing the ship's arresting gear drive system to absorb the aircraft's kinetic energy, slowing it to a stop.
During a "catch," the arresting gear's engine ram is forced into a cylinder, and hydraulic fluid is pushed through the control valve to a cylinder, called the accumulator, which regulates the hydraulic fluid flow and restricts the cable's pull.
The Navy purchases large quantities of arresting gear hydraulic fluid, which is composed of ethylene glycol.

Earthquakes, Frequently Asked Questions, with a Special Section on New York State: Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering (MCEER)
When the aircraft lands, the arresting hook engages cables on the aircraft carrier deck, and the fluid damper is used to prevent shock loads from being transmitted to the aircraft.
Taylor's dampers were installed in the tail section of this carrier-based, supersonic jet, within the aircraft's arresting hook.

Most airfields operated by the US military do have arresting cables for emergencies but I don't know about Australia in general or the airfield in question.
Naval Aviators know they have an arresting hook on their aircraft and do not use AB in case they miss the arresting cable on a carrier landing.
What I meant was the pilot may have momentarily forgot where he was landing, and as a consequence, gave the fighter full military power in case he missed the non-existent arresting cable, that resulted in over-shooting a short runway.

As most of you are aware, Lakehurst is the only place in the world entrusted with making the arresting gear cables (along with numerous other flight critical components) for our aircraft carriers and those of our allies.
That the President chose to join the many Navy and Marine Corps aviators and flight deck personnel who trust their lives with Lakehurst designed, manufactured, and tested products like this arresting cable certainly speaks highly of the Lakehurst team and the contributions that each of you make to this "heritage of service".
The attached photo was taken when three members of our Lakehurst team (Mark Gindele, George DiBiase, Rich Headley) recently traveled to the White House to present President Bush with a section of the actual arresting cable used to bring his aircraft to a safe stop aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72), in early May.

Landing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To land on an aircraft carrier, an aircraft (moving at, perhaps, 150 mph (240 km/h)) is equipped with tailhooks to engage one of up to four arresting cables stretched across the deck, stopping the aircraft within 320 feet (100 m) after engaging one of the cables.
Landing is the last part of a flight, where a flying animal or aircraft returns to the ground.
Aircraft usually land at an airport on a runway or helicopter landing pad.

Arrestor wires - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arrestor wires are thick steel cables fitted to the aft end of the flight deck on CTOL and STOBAR aircraft carriers.
A perfect approach puts the arresting hook past of Wire 2 and before Wire 3, which is why a 3-wire landing is the best mark.
The cables allow CTOL aircraft to land safely on the short runway by connecting with a hook attached to the aircraft.

There are four arresting cables and the "three wire" is the target.
Hitting the three means you kept the airplane on the glidepath all the way to the deck.
Hitting the one and two means you were a little low and perhaps a little to anxious to get back on deck.

 Amazon.com: Fitzcarraldo (1982) : Video
There is hardly a more awe-inspiring or arresting image than that of Fitzcarraldo's ship pulling itself up the mountain with cables and pulleys, or of the ship resting in mid-ascent as seen through the thick morning fog of the jungle.
Fitzcarraldo is one of those archetype figures present wherever big money rears its head, the eternal dreamer who cannot quite pull of an idea.
But these trees are not directly accessible by river because of dangerous rapids, so Fitzcarraldo runs his ship as close as possible via an alternate river and then enlists the aid of the native Peruvians to drag his ship over a mountain to the desired area.

Flight deck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Landing an aircraft on an aircraft carrier was made possible thought the use of arresting cables installed on the flight deck and a tailhook installed on the aircraft.
Later the flight deck was designed into the carrier hull, becoming a structural element (a move necessitated by the ever-increasing size of the ships, from the 13,000 ton USS Langley (CV-1) in 1922 to over a hundred thousand tons in the latest Nimitz-class carriers), and later still, were made of steel.
The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is the surface from which its aircraft take off and land, essentially a miniature airfield at sea.

 Friends of Navy Lakehurst
Lakehurst's primary mission is the manufacture and testing of aircraft launch equipment -- the steam catapults and associated hardware that accelerate Navy jets to takeoff speed -- and the strong arresting cables and massive braking engines that bring the aircraft safely back on a carrier's deck.
Lakehurst survived a 1995 round of military facility closings after base advocates convinced a federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission the Navy was mistaken in its plan to break up Lakehurst operations and move them to installations in Florida and Maryland.
Lakehurst is also home to 22 tenant organizations, including the New Jersey National Guard, an Air Force field training mission, and Army aviation and recruiting.

As his aircraft's tail hook reached for one of the four arresting cables spanning the flight deck, Tysler applied full power to the Super Hornet's two General Electric turbofan engines.
Only when a safe arrested landing was assured (on a "number three wire") and the flight deck officer's lighted wands signaled him to reduce power did Tysler pull his engine throttles back to idle and follow the directions of yellow-shirted aircraft handlers to taxi to his parking spot on the busy flight deck.
Eric Devita, quickly but purposefully reviewed the maintenance records for the Super Hornet he would fly during the squadron's third impromptu tanker mission of the night, Flight operations were scheduled to continue well past midnight, and it was proving to be an interesting but challenging conclusion to the day's exercise activity.
