Arrochar Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland
Arrochar is recorded as being called "Arathor" in 1248 and "Arachor" in 1350.
This early influx of tourists also meant that the Arrochar Alps, the mountains on the west side of the head of Loch Long opposite Arrochar, became amongst the first of Scotland's mountains to be appreciated as objects of sport or enjoyment.
The west shore of Loch Long opposite Arrochar is home to a pier that was used between 1912 and 1986 as a base by the Royal Navy for torpedo testing.

Arrochar names a pretty village in the southwest Highlands at the head of Loch Long, the area that surrounds it, and a mountain range; the "Arrochar Alps".
Their stewardship of Arrochar is said to have begun in the late 12th century when Gilcrist, son of Alwyn, Earl of Lennox, received the lands to govern as a vassal - in feudal Scotland this meant that he would govern the land with the protection of the crown in exchange for homage and allegiance.
The wild days of the MacFarlanes are now gone and people come to Arrochar to enjoy its scenery and to use it as a base for exploring the Arrochar Alps.
