Arrol-Johnston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1905 the name was changed to the Arrol-Johnston Car Company Ltd. The dog-cart was propelled with an opposed-twin engine having four pistons; it was high, slow, and started by pulling on a rope through the floorboards; nevertheless, it was built until 1905.
Pullinger (formerly of Darracq, Sunbeam and Humber) joined Arrol-Johnston; he swept out the old range in favour of the new 15ยท9hp of 2835cc.
Locomotive engineer George Johnston turned his attention to internal combustion in 1894, not long after his experimental steam tram had burned.

 c.1903 ARROL-JOHNSTON THREE CYLINDER 20 HP SIX-SEATER REAR-ENTRANCE DETACHABLE TOP LIMOUSINE - Motorbase
At the end of January 1896 George Johnston was arraigned before the Glasgow magistrates charged with driving, on the 4th January, on the city streets, a 'locomotive', contrary to the provisions of the 1881 Locomotives on Highways Act.
It seems to have been at some time during 1904 that Johnston sought a simpler design that would retain the smoothness of the opposed-piston engine and his solution was a three-cylinder power unit with just three pistons sufficing.
With the intention of balancing the mass of the two outer pistons, or at least mitigating this perceived problem, the middle cylinder was bored to a larger diameter.

The Secret History of the British Motor Car part 2: The high road to Scotland - Mini Cooper Information from Mini Mania
In 1899 two former Arrol-Johnston staffmen set up a rival business named "Albion" - a curious choice for an uncompromisingly Scottish company.
Backed by Sir William Arrol, engineer of the Forth Bridge, he developed a wood-bodied dog-cart powered by a curious flat-twin engine which boasted four pistons and was started by pulling on a rope.
Others had already filled the gap: in 1894 George Johnston built a steam tram, but when it went up in flames, he turned to motor cars as a less lethal option.

autoclassic.com :: the history of classic cars : Arrol Johnston Dogcart
The Arrol-Johnston marque was founded very early in the life of the British motor industry, in 1897, when Sir William Arrol (the noted civil engineer) and George Johnston got together to develop the original ‘Dogcart’ model, which went into production in a factory at Camlachie, an industrial area of Glasgow.
The city was not short of industrial skills, of course, but in the Victorian era they had been applied mainly to heavy industries, such as shipbuilding.
This early promise soon faded, for no cars were made north of the Border after the 1920s until Rootes set up a new plant in the 1960s to manufacture Hillman Imps.
