Arrow Air (IATA: JW, ICAO: APW, and Callsign: Big A) is a cargo airline based in Miami, Florida.
Arrow Air had many passenger flights from JFK International Airport in New York and from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan at the time, using Lockheed L-1011 as well as McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and DC-8 equipment at the time.
Formerly a subsidiary of International Air Leases, Air Arrow was acquired by Fine Air in 1999, but it remained flying under the name Arrow Air.

Arrow Air Flight 1285 was a McDonnell Douglas DC-8 registered N950JW.
On December 12, 1985, the aircraft was chartered to carry U.S. servicemen from a six-month stay in the Sinai, where they were overseeing a peacekeeping force, back to Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Those servicemen who died were from the following divisions: all but 12 were members of the 3d Battalion, 502d Infantry, and 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); 11 were from other Forces Command units; and one was a CID agent from the Criminal Investigations Command.

A federal bankruptcy judge in Miami cleared Arrow Air to emerge from bankruptcy June 10 by approving the Miami-based all-cargo airline's reorganization plan.
Arrow Air filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 28 and has been sold twice this year to different investment groups, most recently to Arrow Air II of New York.
"We are thrilled that the plan has been confirmed," said James J. Pinto, one of three principals at Arrow Air II LLC.
