Suspicions that something was wrong with Arrow Lakes itself, rather than the hatchery or some other problem, were fueled by the discovery that the survival of fry (baby fish) counted migrating out from the hatchery and again returning as adults was also declining precipitously (Figure 2, left).
Arrow Lakes is now being fertilized also in the hopes of stimulating the food chain and preserving the trophy rainbow and bull trout stocks for which the Arrow Lake is renowned.
The trend in Kootenay Lake kokanee numbers echoes dam construction, mysid introduction, fertilizer plant operations and lake fertilization, increasing in the1960s when the Kimberley fertilizer plant was fully operational, peaking in the early 1970s, dropping in the 1980s and declining steadily from 1986 to 1991.

Hugh Keenleyside Dam is a hydroelectric dam spanning the Columbia River, 12 km (6.5 miles) upstream of the city of Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada.
The reservoirs behind the dam is named Arrow Lakes extending 232 km (145 miles) north to Revelstoke, and contain 8.76 km3 (7.1 Maf) of reservoir volume.
The dam, originally named the Arrow Dam, was built in 1968 as part of fulfilling Canada's role in the Columbia River Treaty, and was intended only to control the flow of water in the Columbia River for downstream dams, but in 2002 a 185 megawatt (MW) powerhouse was added.

NAKUSP –; BC Hydro is contributing a surplus F-350 4X4-service truck to the Arrow Lakes Search and Rescue, based in Nakusp.
The Arrow Lakes Search and Rescue completed 12 rescues in 2002 and four to date in 2003.
"Due to the remoteness of Nakusp and the surrounding area, the Arrow Lakes Search and Rescue is sometimes the first response to life threatening emergencies, and a rescue vehicle is critical to their success," said Nakusp Mayor Bill Cowan.
