It's 1915, and Fletcher Arrowsmith is a Connecticut farm boy who heads to Europe to learn to fly and fight the Prussians.
Arrowsmith's mixture of WWI aesthetics and sword-and-sorcery elements must've been tricky to pull off visually, but Pacheco holds his own, drawing with a slick-lined grace and understating the witty variations he's devised for everything from the soldiers' outfits to European architecture.

Arrowsmith #4 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
However a conversation with his commanding officer gets him back out interacting with the world, but when Arrowsmith is on hand to witness the effects of an evil gas attack, what little happiness he managed to find is quickly dampened by this display of outright savagery by the enemy.
The opening battle where Arrowsmith proves he won't crack under pressure was also nicely handled, as the art shows a fine understanding of the idea that these characters are flying through the air, freed from the confines of gravity.
The scene where Arrowsmith visits the bedside of his one time rival was also well done, though it would be more effective if I hadn't already seen this scene play out in every other war movie I've ever seen.

Arrowsmith is an original side project from award-winning Astro City writer Kurt Busiek set in a gothic alternate history version of the First World War, a steampunk environ with arcane magic replacing mustard gas and floating squads of soldiers with shoulder-perching mini-dragons subbing for Sopwith Camels.
Recoiling from the horror of what he has participated in, Arrowsmith spends most of this issue (with epistolary narration) elucidating the finer points of both his guilt and mystification with the mindless blood sport of mass conflict.
Interspersed between the straightforward bits are a handful of abstract panels that range from morbidly comic to powerful noir sequences, revealing Conrad's dexterous artistic and narrative range.

The story of Fletcher Arrowsmith is told in Arrowsmith a miniseries coming from writer Kurt Busiek, penciller Carlos Pacheco and inker Jesus Merino from Wildstorm's Cliffhanger imprint in July.
Back when Gorilla Comics was starting up, we talked about creating a project to do there, and Arrowsmith was what came out of that - I suggested the basic concept, as something that could have wide-open adventure possibilities, and lots of fascinating settings and unusual visuals that Carlos could really go to town on.
Arrowsmith, as mentioned earlier, isn't just a coming of age story set during a war, there is a definite fantastical element, Busiek says.

I’m glad I got the comics because Vaughan does cliff-hangers wonderfully and also because I don’t like digest size for the collection, but mainly because this is one of the most consistently enjoyable books that Marvel is putting out at the moment.
