Arrowsmith (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arrowsmith is a novel by American author and playwright Sinclair Lewis that was published in 1925.
Arrowsmith tells the story of young Dr. Martin Arrowsmith as he makes his way through medical school, marries, considers the lure of high-paying industrial research, and takes a post with a research institute.
Arrowsmith is a progressive, even something of a rebel, and often challanges the existing state of things when he finds it wanting.

William Arrowsmith: a recollection by James W. Tuttleton
Arrowsmith had always understood the decisive influence of critical quarterlies on the intellectual and artistic expression of the age.
Arrowsmith wanted teachers of the humanities to be equals of the heroes or great men of Classical epic and drama, men of areté, worthy of emulation; or, failing that, men who at least knew what greatness was and desired it for themselves and their students.
Arrowsmith’s only other appearance in The New Criterion was a spirited exchange of letters in June of 1987 with William Jay Smith, who had had the temerity to challenge Arrowsmith’s translation of Montale and who even called him, of all things, a pedant.

Martin Arrowsmith is a man with a mission, a scientific truth-seeker, an idealist who perpetually returns to his pure research interests despite the material influences and social pressures of the world around him.
Ultimately, Arrowsmith is heroic in his remarkable perseverance and quest for truth, although some might label him a cold-hearted escapist for deserting his wealthy second wife, young child and promising New York City career in favor of a rustic laboratory and rugged backwoods existence on a fellow rebel researcher's Vermont farm.

The book Arrowsmith is saying that when society changes we can't break down and fall apart we must stay together and move on gaining speed as we move along and if we stumble we have to get right back up and keep moving.

Arrowsmith, however, is able to escape this fate by running away from profits and became one of the few who could be "devoted to science purely for the sake of science.

Arrowsmith is simply a joy to read, especially for people who have a flair for some classic literature without getting too deep into concentrated philosophic thought.
Simply put, Arrowsmith today, were he to practice in modern medicine, would probably be no better or worse off than he was in 1908 through circa 1920, when the novel takes place.

Arrowsmith is about the growth of Fletcher Arrowsmith from an idealistic boy to a mature/experienced adult.
And in typical Busiek fashion, instead of making the book a dungeon and dragons swash-buckling adventure type story, he concentrates on showing the personal growth and loss of Fletcher Arrowsmith as well as the many tragedies/ugliness of war.
Not too give an impression that the book is full of talking heads, Busiek sprinkles the story with enough action to satisty those Micahel Bay-movie fanatics.

My feeling is that as children we gravitate from the educational, lower case alphabet which filled all those baby books we learn to read at school to the more exciting and urgent upper case lettering found in comic books, which grown ups found difficult to read because everyone was shouting.
Lower case lettering throughout a comic book would've been unthinkable before the advent of digital lettering (yeah, blame me) because it's just waaay too difficult to letter quickly and efficiently in lower case at the size necessary.
I just saw another example recently, where upper & lower case was used at the beginning of an upper case sentence -- I think with the word, "ahem" -- and the effect was that the upper and lower case felt like a whisper or a clearing of the throat.
