		Arroyo Hondo Canyon, often called the Jewel of the Gaviota Coast, is steeped in California history.
		Arroyo Hondo (meaning “deep creek”) was once part of 26,500 acre Rancho Nuestra Señora del Refugio, the only Spanish land concession made by Spanish authorities in Santa Barbara County, granted in 1794 by Spanish governor Borica to Jose Francisco Ortega, first Commandante of the Santa Barbara Presidio.
		In creating the Arroyo Hondo Preserve, the Land Trust’s primary goals are protection of the natural and historic preserve with careful stewardship and monitoring to conserve the Preserve’s biodiversity and native wildlife.
