RPGnet: Review of Ars Magica Fifth Edition
Ars Magica Fifth Edition is a game set in a fantasy Medieval Europe (called Mythic Europe), a mirror of our own history where all the legends and myths that people in the Middle Ages believed is true.
Ars Magica’s innovation in the late 80s was the idea of each player having multiple characters, which they would be able to play at different times during a campaign (called a Saga in ArM).
I consider Ars Magica to be one of the pre-eminent role-playing games, largely due to a number of innovative systems and gaming styles when it first came out in the late 80s.

Originally developed by Jonathan Tweet and Mark Rein-Hagen in the late 1980s, Ars Magica was first published by Lion Rampant games, who also published the 2nd edition of the game.
In the early 1990s, rights to Ars Magica were acquired by White Wolf Game Studio, the company Rein-Hagen had in the meantime founded.

The whole Ars Magica community is hoping that the new edition will bring many new people into the game — it is much clearer and better presented than the 4th edition in my opinion, and makes an ideal starting point.
Ars Magica is a complex game, and for a first game I would recommend no more than four players, plus yourself.
There is a description of it in the Ars Magica 4th introductory story, no that it matters because the adventure is set on the journey, not when you arrive.

That system is still clunkily dispersed throughout the text where it doesn't basically boil down to, "Uh, make a spell up." I blame the dead hand of the Ars fan community, which would never have the nuts to reexamine the system from the ground up.
What Ars needed to do is create a tranparent formulaic structure for spell creation and apply it to every aspect of the system.

Ars Magica was originally written by Jonathan Tweet (who wrote the 3E player's handbook) and Mark Reign*Hagen.
The developers at WW decided to turn Ars into the "back-history" of the world of darkness, in in doing so introduced a bunch of utterly boneheaded ideas into Ars, and stuck massive numbers of demons everywhere in the books in an attempt to make Ars "darker" to boost sales.
WW essentially tried to turn Ars into what Mage: Sorcerer's Crusade is. M:SC is a good prequel to the WoD, much better than a compromised Ars, and a good game in its own right, bur has a very different feel from Ars Magica.

Ars Magica is a fantasy rules system and campaign setting which emphasis magic and wizards above everything else.
Based in Europe during the 13th century, it assumes a world where magic is real and the secretive Order of Hermes hides behind the scenes, balancing the power of human magic against the Divine, Infernal and older powers of the Fey.
However, Ars Magica was flexible enough to allow the addition of non-human races, high powered magic and monsters, demons and devils so loved of Greyhawk.

Ars Magica has one of the best magic systems around, mainly because the magi have been made the focal point of the game.
Many years may go by in a single session, as magi study, invent items and spells, take part in political intrigue and generally further their own power in ways most other games gloss over in a few paragraphs.
