  Ars Technica Subscriptions: Page 1
Ars Technica turned to voluntary subscriptions in 2001 for three reasons: we want to keep Ars Technica on the 'net, keep advertising content low, and we want to be able to provide the best service possible.
Ars Technica and the Ars OpenForum is one of the largest tech communities online, and from your e-mails, we've learned that many of you are eager to help support the community.
Ars Technica is quite unique in that we endeavor to buy the materials we review whenever possible, and we never take handouts from manufacturers who expect a pat-on-the-back in return (and many of them do).

Ars Technica tortures the second gen iPod shuffle
Ars Technica’s Jacqui Cheng puts the second generation iPod shuffle through its paces, reviewing not only the essential elements of usability, but also taking the time to step on it, drop it from a third floor balcony, immerse it in beer, and run over it with her car.
I then took the shuffle out running with me. Clipped securely to my Ars hoodie, there was little danger of the shuffle falling…so I removed it from the hoodie and held it in-hand.

But we think Stokes is right when he says: "Personally, I have a hard time imagining that IBM, ATI, and Nintendo have invested all this time and money into a product that's basically a speedbump of an existing product." Back to incredulity.

Digg - Ars Technica Reviews The Zune
Ars usually has quality content especially when compared to sensationalist bandwith-mongering whores like Engadget.
The Ars review clearly states that the Zune doesn't support VBR encoding.

Inside the IBM PowerPC 970 — Part I: Design Philosophy and Front End: Page 1
It is definitely true that a comparison between the 970 and the upcoming Opteron would be much more apples-to-apples than the current project, and in fact such a comparison seems like a no-brainer.
However, having published extensively on the P4 and G4e here at Ars, it's much more convenient for both myself and for Ars' audience to refer to these two processors as a baseline when talking about IBM's new offering.
Still, there's nothing to stop me from doing a later article on the Opteron that uses the 970 as a basis for comparison.

MacNN | Ars Technica on "Mac Pro" specs
Ars Technica has offered a detailed tally that includes 1GB of RAM, an ATI X1900 XT graphics card, 250GB hard drive, motherboard, six SATA-II ports, five PCI slots (2 PCIe, 3 PCI-X, 1 PCI), power supply, Apple's Mighty mouse with a keyboard, DVD burner, and two Xeon 5150 CPUs running at 2.66GHz.
The report also reinforces recent rumors surrounding the enclosure of the Mac Pro, suggesting that Apple's new enclosure will remain similar to its current Power Mac G5.
Apple will probably use Intel's Merom chip in its MacBook Pro, MacBook, and Mac mini models due to heat requirements, as the Conroe chip would be too hot for the Mini and consume too much power for usage in notebooks.
