Comics Radar 031 - Interview with Sean Taylor.
While, I think it is a topic worthy of discussion, I’m not actually talkin about sexuality in comics, I just want to link to this story about Gemma Corin, who, at 22, did her masters on Sexuality in Comics after reading Young Avengers, which features two “out” characters, Wiccan (or Asgardian) and Hulkling.
Anyways, I got a free comic for anyone (other than Gemma herself, if she reads this) that can identify what she’s reading.

Batman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the introduction of DC Comics' multiverse in the 1960s, it is retroactively established that the Golden Age Batman lives on the parallel world of Earth-Two.
The Silver Age of comic books in DC Comics is sometimes held to have begun in 1956 when the publisher introduced Barry Allen as a new, updated version of The Flash.
After Zero Hour, DC Comics introduced the idea of Batman as an urban legend; however, Batman is "outed" in the "War Games" crossover, when his live image is broadcast over the news during a brief daytime appearance in front of a high school under siege in Gotham.

Arsenal learns that his daughter needs a kidney transplant, and his newfound connection to Vandal Savage may be his only way out.
This story is well on its way to setting Arsenal apart from his past with Green Arrow and his fellow Titans, allowing him to finally stand on his own as a major player in the DCU that has been around for almost 57 years.

The Deadbolt - Arsenal Down Juventus 2-0
On the strength of goals by Spanish teen sensation Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry, coupled with a self-destructive Italian side, Arsenal have gone ahead by 2 goals in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and spoiled Patrick Vieria's return to Highbury.
Using the Highbury crowd to their advantage, the Gunners were able to maintain their tight defense, in the seventh straight game without allowing a goal.
In the 69th minute, Arsenal' frustrations would end, as Aleksandr Hleb fed a ball forward to Fabregas, who ran on to challenge the Italian goalkeeper.

The religion of The Thing (Ben Grimm) of the Fantastic Four
Many major comic book characters have died or apparently died only to be brought back to life later by various means (technological, magical, mystical, alien, etc., or simply by revealing that the character had not actually died after all).
But comic book fans, we tend to take the integrity of our universe very seriously, and the fact that there was one story in 1974 or whenever that showed -- that indicated -- you know, "incontroversibly" (sic) that this is the case when, in fact, it doesn't really prove anything.
Many of them have debated their beliefs in the comics - as you say, not the hardline way, but that is definitely not the same as saying that they are not Christian superheroes [or Jewish superheroes], or that they are not devoted.

Daniel Pérez is an up-and-coming artist and colorist who has worked for Marvel and DC Comics in the United States and Les Humanoids Associes in France.
Salvador has created a mad world in 'El Arsenal', one which combines his love for science fiction and action movies with the most unknown details of mexican folklore.

Sequential Tart -- A Comics Industry Web Zine
You get the feeling that Grayson would just as soon have her characters sit down in a coffee shop and talk about their feelings all issue than go out and stamp down the forces of evil.
Okay, I always yell that the ability to write characters is the most important part of comic book writing, but, I say it with a caveat: character may dictate action, but, action also dictates character.
What I mean is that the characters have to have something to react against---that old fashioned thing called plot, man against man, man against nature, man against himself stuff that we all learn about in 5th grade English class.

The superhero now known as Arsenal was for many decades known as "Speedy," a heroic archer who was originally introduced as the teenaged sidekick of the adult hero Green Arrow.
Apparently since the inception of the character, whose real name is Roy Harper, Jr., the key ingredient to his origin story is that Harper was the son of a forest ranger who was orphaned and raised by Navajo Indians.
Yet in the DC comics in which he appears, it has been clearly shown that the traditional Navajo religion (or at least his perception of it) as his own belief system.

El Arsenal: Unknown Enemy #1 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
This book gets one automatic bullet for not being a superhero comic; instead it’s a near-future science fiction tale that could be broadly accurately described as Cowboy Bebop with more emphasis on the “Cowboy” bit (although there are musical influences here too, notably in the chapter titles).
Since one of the great unrealised truths in the American comics market is that the medium is absolutely perfect for doing science fiction, that’s great to see.
There’s some good work done with the art too; storytelling is clear, and the comic as a whole has that rich, sumptuous look common to European work (which I like a lot) combined with an almost anime-esque visual style (which I’m not so fond of, but it’s done well here).

BUZZSCOPE :: El Arsenal: Unknown Enemy #1 (of 3)
El Arsenal has the kinetic energy and bombast of Robert Rodriguez’ earliest films, and as introductory issues go, it wisely opts for a few hard jabs straight to the eye instead of the drawn-out, rope-a-dope approach that plagues most mainstream comics these days.
The one notable flaw comes in the lettering (and possibly, the translation is equally at fault here?) as there’s a handful of typos and missing punctuation that occasionally pull the reader out of the story.
Lettering/translation issues aside, El Arsenal has all of the kinetic energy, bombast and melodrama of Robert Rodriguez’ earliest films, and as introductory issues go, Vazquez Mtz.

 The Roar of Comics
So, in 1996, with a new Green Arrow, Buddhist monk Connor Hawke, and a new Green Lantern, freelance artist Kyle Rayner, Chuck Dixon and Ron Marz thought it'd be fun to do a crossover and revive the old GL/GA from the "Relevancy" period of the early '70s.
The day is coming, and coming soon, when DC and Marvel make the transition from the magazine publishers they were to the book publishers they need to be.
Yes, the move from magazines to books will be good for comics in general, both in terms of art and business, but I'm not sure it will be good for ongoing superhero comics.
