Clear, lucid melodies are her forté and it is in her delicious, exotic themes that Lupin shines most.
Her main Lupin theme is a wonderful embrace of romanticism and mystery underpinned by variations on an immediately impressive five-note figure that is as bold as it is evocative.
With its strength in melody and evocativeness, there’s no reason that Arsène Lupin shouldn’t be one of the most popular action-adventure film scores of the year and perhaps even of the decade.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsene Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar - III. The Escape of Arsene Lupin (by Maurice Leblanc)
Arsene Lupin had just finished his repast and taken from his pocket and excellent cigar, with a gold band, which he was examining with unusual care, when the door of his cell was opened.
Wearied by his fruitless task, the judge had suspended his examinations, but he resumed them after the two intercepted messages were brought to his attention; and regularly, at mid-day, Arsene Lupin was taken from the prison to the Depot in the prison-van with a certain number of other prisoners.
On the second day thereafter, the `Echo de France,’ which had apparently become the official reporter of the exploits of Arsene Lupin, it was said that he was one of its principal shareholders-- published a most complete account of this attempted escape.

Indeed, the two characters were bound to meet and, in an unprecedented act of literary pastiche and cross-over, Sherlock Holmes himself appeared several times in the Lupin novels, first as himself, then in the transparent guise of "Herlock Sholmes," after some legal objections from Conan Doyle.

Arsène Lupin by Debbie Wiseman | Cinemusic.net Soundtrack Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
What fascinates me is that while this is (to my knowledge) the first time Wiseman's actually written anything that even resembles action music, her writing in Arséne Lupin is actually significantly better than much of the action writing from the composers most famous for it today.
Her main theme frequently guides us through these passages with all the deft class one could hope for, and keeps us from fidgeting and wishing that the pace would pick up - even when the volume and tempo drop, the mystery and romance remain just as enchanting.
I know I keep saying this, but Arséne Lupin is a triumph in sheer spectacle and whether you fell it was through King Kong, Star Wars, or Batman, if you first fell in love with film music through spectacle, then you cannot afford to miss Wiseman's new classic.
