THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- ARSENIC AND OLD LACE
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE ($25) is a true cinematic gem- a movie that is as funny today as it was when it was released nearly sixty years ago.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE opens on Halloween, with the arrival of nephew Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant), who has just married Elaine Harper (Priscilla Lane), the girl who lives next door to his doting aunts.
Of course, Mortimer is shocked and dumbfounded to discover that his sweet old aunts are serial killers, with a dozen bodies buried in the cellar of their Brooklyn home.

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - Review - Piddleville
Arsenic and Old Lace is a great comedy.
Based on a hugely popular play by Joseph Kesselring (the movie was actually made in 1941 but not released till the play's Broadway run was through, 1944), it's a movie about two nice old ladies who happen to murder lonely strangers and bury them in their basement.
Cary Grant may have been the star but Arsenic and Old Lace pays as much attention to its other characters and this is one of the big reasons it succeeds so well.

Although they all have a whimsical nostalgic charm today, the characters of old, are just as real as the ones today and with the romanticized portrayal of the 40s and 50s, Capra allows us to regularly sit back and dream about old times where everything seemed to be still alright.
Well, unless you take the Brewster sisters from "Arsenic And Old Lace," that is. Nice, lovely, polite, charming and forthcoming old ladies on one hand, it soon turns out they have a secret that would break most men, making a mockery of the supposed perfection of this romanticized world.
With poisoned wine the two charming old ladies are convinced they are doing the right thing and keep piling up bodies in their basement.

Arsenic and Old Lace is not a crappy who-dunnit (not to be misunderstood, not all who-dunnits are crappy), but a cleverly assembled story utilizing the popular technique of overkill used quite effectively today by directors like Peter Jackson who create humorously gory horror movies that conservative countries like Finland ban without question.
