THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- ARSENIC AND OLD LACE
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE ($25) is a true cinematic gem- a movie that is as funny today as it was when it was released nearly sixty years ago.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE opens on Halloween, with the arrival of nephew Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant), who has just married Elaine Harper (Priscilla Lane), the girl who lives next door to his doting aunts.
Of course, Mortimer is shocked and dumbfounded to discover that his sweet old aunts are serial killers, with a dozen bodies buried in the cellar of their Brooklyn home.

Scifilm -- Reviews, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (1944)
I saw ARSENIC AND OLD LACE for the first time on Halloween night when I was about 12 or 13.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is the story of Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant), who has just gotten married to Elaine Harper (Priscilla Lane), the daughter of his neighbor Reverend Harper (Grant Mitchell).
"Arsenic and Old Lace," however, was such a big hit that it ran for three years on Broadway.

DVDFILE.COM: Arsenic And Old Lace review
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE was based on a Broadway play of the same name.
The movie was shot in 1941, but could not be released until the enormously successful play finished its run three years later.
One difference between the play and the movie is that the play contains the hilarious "I'm a bastard!" line (if you've seen the movie you know what I am talking about) that the paragons of virtue on the censorship board prevented from being in the finished film.

DVD Review - Arsenic And Old Lace   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Although they all have a whimsical nostalgic charm today, the characters of old, are just as real as the ones today and with the romanticized portrayal of the 40s and 50s, Capra allows us to regularly sit back and dream about old times where everything seemed to be still alright.
Well, unless you take the Brewster sisters from "Arsenic And Old Lace," that is. Nice, lovely, polite, charming and forthcoming old ladies on one hand, it soon turns out they have a secret that would break most men, making a mockery of the supposed perfection of this romanticized world.
Creating an atmospheric movie filled with thunder and lightning, one that has shuddering and grotesque elements that could come right out of a Universal monster movie, and combining these elements with witty light-hearted slapstick comedy rampant with outrageous characters, makes "Arsenic And Old Lace" a memorable classic that truly deserves to be seen.

Based on a hugely popular play by Joseph Kesselring (the movie was actually made in 1941 but not released till the play's Broadway run was through, 1944), it's a movie about two nice old ladies who happen to murder lonely strangers and bury them in their basement.
The movie is also gem of an example of the wonderful supporting actors Hollywood use to populate its movies with.
Cary Grant may have been the star but Arsenic and Old Lace pays as much attention to its other characters and this is one of the big reasons it succeeds so well.

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of the most chaotic and hilarious movies ever made.
Because of his uproariously unforgettable role in Arsenic and Old Lace, John Alexander ("Teddy Roosevelt" Brewster) will forever respond to the name Teddy Roosevelt when people call to him on the street (I think he is dead now).
Arsenic and Old Lace is not a crappy who-dunnit (not to be misunderstood, not all who-dunnits are crappy), but a cleverly assembled story utilizing the popular technique of overkill used quite effectively today by directors like Peter Jackson who create humorously gory horror movies that conservative countries like Finland ban without question.

ARSENIC is filled with both witty dialogue and a great deal of physical comedy, which blends hysterically together to show you a day in the life of an uptight drama critic terrified of marriage.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE may be somewhat dated and completely unbelievable, but it's also a hysterical fl comedy classic.

Arsenic and Old Lace (play) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The play is a farce revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy family and local police in Brooklyn New York, as he debates whether to go through with marrying the woman he loves.
The basic plot matches that of the movie adaptation, with a few minor changes in background.
When Kesselring taught at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, he lived in a boarding house called the Goerz House, and many of the features of its living room are reflected in the Brewster sisters' living room, where the action of the play is set.
