But genre-crossing kitsch is a tricky game, as demonstrated by the hair-raising 50's rocker "Rap 'N Roll" (written by Iván Calderón); two reggae cuts ("Como Se Siente" and the dancehall romp "Ven Conmigo") aren't much to brag about either.
With the demise of Orquesta De La Luz, this eleven-piece band from Holland is the best salsa band from outside the Americas I've heard.

They draw much of their material from the great Cuban soneros—Lorenzo Hierrezuelo of Los Compadres, Adela Martinez, Guillermo Rodríguez Fiffe, and Arsenio Rodríguez—while also incorporating more contemporary Cuban songs.
Although they specialize in the classic "son oriental," you might also hear them playing a guaracha, a conga, a chachacha, or boleros by César Portillo de la Luz and José Antonio Méndez.
The group, named after the famous composition "Fuego en el 23" by Arsenio Rodríguez, consists of David Garlitz on Cuban tres and vocals, Jim Jordan on bass, Scott MacDonald on bongo, and Robin Moore on guitar, percussion, trumpet, and vocals.

The first one is a song by Afro-Cuban singer and composer Arsenio Rodríguez, “Bruca Manigua”, in which the singer expresses his “African origin”: “I am Carabalí, negro by birth” (“Yo soy Carabalí, negro de nación”).
The second text is the Miguel Barnet classic “El Cimarrón” (1966), the biography of a former slave told to Barnet by the man himself.

Starting his early career as a bassist, tres player (the mandolin of Cuba) Candido learned also how to play bongó at the young age of three in Havana.
Establishing himself in the 1930's as a teenager with some of Cuba's most well known "son" (folk song) groups such as Arsenio Rodriguez's Conjunto, Chano Pozo's Conjunto Azul and many others, his boyhood friends were fellow legendary percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Armando Peraza.
He then began to work as a studio and show musician at Cuba's biggest radio stations and at the famed Tropicana in Havana.
