Vladimir Arsenyev's parents came from serf peasant families, but his father, the illegitimate son of a Tver member of the urban lower class, having gained his freedom, rose slowly but surely in a railroad company from clerk to middle-echelon official.
By a quirk of fate, Arsenyev, although he was a Czarist officer, managed to slip through the revolution and transition to the Soviet regime relatively unscathed, continuing his former activities.
Ironically, having survived incredible hardships in his previous travels, Arsenyev caught a cold during an inspection trip to the lower reaches of the Amur as an official, and returned to Vladivostok seriously ill. He died on September 4, 1930, at the age of sixty.
