Arfons had two half brothers by his mother; (additional info and facts about Walt Arfons) Walt Arfons, ten years older, who was to become his partner and later competitor in autosports, and Dale, eight years older, as well as one sister Lou, eighteen months older.
Arfons' family operated a feed mill in rural Ohio, where the Arfons brothers exercised their mechanical skills and ingenuity.
Art and Walt continued their drag racing partnership with a series of Green Monster cars until the late (The decade from 1950 to 1959) 1950s, parting amicably but competing against each other.

Fellow Britons George Eyston and John Cobb waged their own battle for the record later in the Thirties, before the Sixties saw an explosion of speed as the pure jetcars appeared.
Craig Breedlove broke 400 mph with his Spirit of America in 1963, and ventured first through 500 and 600 in a game of Russian Roulette with rival Art Arfons between 1964 and '65.
Breedlove's final 600.601 mph mark succumbed to compatriot Gary Gabelich's 622.407mph with the Blue Flame in October 1970.

At Duke University, Mullins was an All-America selection in 1963 and 1964 and received the ACC Player of the Year honors and the McKevlin Award and ACC Tournament MVP accolades as a senior.
Also elected is a man who set several land speed records and was a drag racing pioneer, the only one of the Chevrolet brothers to race in the Indianapolis 500, a pre- and post-war sprint car builder, a three-time Winston Cup champion, and the King of the Outlaws.
Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford, a Texas resident, entered the room in the cockpit of the restored car that Art Cross drove to a second-place finish at Indianapolis in 1953.
