Outsider Art has emerged as a successful art marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1992); thus the term is sometimes misapplied as a catch-all marketing label for art created by people outside the "art world" mainstream, regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.
Art Brut was his solution to this problem - only Art Brut was immune to the influences of culture, immune to being absorbed and assimilated, because the artists themselves were not willing or able to be assimilated.

Art Brut’s music is, arguably, not much more or less unique than Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, or whatever neo-[older genre] band we like to hate, but they certainly don’t try to set the world on fire as they deliver previously-created music with a monsoon of creative bite.
Art Brut’s instrumental aptitude comes in a distant third behind their compositional formatting and lead singer Eddie Argos’ relentless energy, but the band’s crashing percussion, tube-driven guitar ferocity, and fat bass lines all prove vital to Bang Bang Rock and Roll’s success.

Many bands have promised to bring intelligence back into rock’n’roll, but few offer it quite so readily as on the debut album by Art Brut – even if it’s a little too frequently brains of the somewhat smart-arsed variety.
This is down to Art Brut band-leader Eddie Argos, a loud-mouthed student type in vintage blazer, whose half-sung, half-bellowed vocal – rambling, witticism-strewn missives about beautiful girls, modern art, and Top Of The Pops – surfs unsteadily atop a musical backdrop of cranked-up garage-rock clatter, distorted rockabilly, and good honest first-wave punk-rock.
The band sound like they enjoyed every second of writing, rehearsing and recording this album and it is rare to find an act that can so skillfully merge humour, melody and power with such effortless aplomb.

 Rock-am-Ring 2006: Spielplan & Bands: Band Profile
The year 2004 was when the band first started to tour and perform in a variety of unlikely — indeed eccentric and very British— venues; for example, they performed at London's Tate Gallery, a venue already well-known to Eddie Argos — who did not name the band Art Brut by accident.
Time and time again, the band's gigs have confirmed that Art Brut is truly original (it gave a notable appearance at the Route du Rock festival in France as well as numerous hard-to-forget gigs in Germany).
With the release of its first album BANG BANG ROCK and ROLL in the UK in late 2005, the critics were unanimous: Art Brut is the group that nostalgics for leftfield punk, fans of abrasive Brit pop, or simply anybody who loves (often droll) slice-of-life songs have been waiting for.

Back in 2003, when Art Brut formed, the British music scene was dominated by power pop outfits like The Libertines, who were better as celebrities than musicians.
Whereas bands like Bloc Party and the aforementioned Arctic Monkeys are slick pop bands with little punk-rock edge, Art Brut's sound recalls nothing if not the dirty, jangly guitar sound of early Pavement, or Pavement's main influence, the British post-hardcore outfit The Fall.
Art Brut is one of the most original, if not popular, bands to emerge from the UK in years, turning their back on a decade of Britpop that fetishizes the heydey of British music in the 1960s.

There are no influences here, except to say that Art Brut has been influenced by every rock band to come before, and every rock band to follow will be recycling the same conventions – most likely without the all-encompassing self-awareness.
On the opening track Art Brut promised they would make everything okay, and “Maternity Ward” closes the album with Argos’ confirmation: “Everything’s gonna be alright/I promise.” Promise they did – and now I believe.
