Phipps hopes that next year YHS might hire an additional part-time art teacher, though that request was denied this year.
Each year, Phipps said that as many as six YHS graduates are graduating and moving on to top art or design schools like the Chicago Art Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Rochester Institute of Technology (which teaches photography and film-making).
But even for students pursuing other careers, Phipps said, "portfolios have become a big thing." All kinds of students, he said, are putting art portfolios together with their academic transcripts to help them stand out in their applications to colleges.

Before a well was dug, water was carried from Art Phipps' farm about 1/8 mile to the east by two older boys who were reimbursed for their services.
