Art exhibition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Art exhibitions are traditionally the space in which art objects (in the most general sense) meet an audience, a temporary presentation of art.
The practice of art exhibitions dates back to at least 1673, when the royally sanctioned French institution of art patronage, the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture (a division of the Académie des beaux-arts), held its first semi-public art exhibit at the Salon Carré.
Probably the most prominent art exhibition of contemporary art is the 1955 founded documenta in Kassel, Germany.

Reflecting themes addressed in the VFH conference, the exhibition speaks to the tensions between tradition and modernity and demonstrates how the former may be incorporated in a new sense of identity that is open to – while questioning the meanings of and thereby shaping – change.
The exhibition will provide an exciting entry point to the international contemporary art scene, connecting what is happening in art with a culture to which many Americans trace their roots, while offering challenging perspectives on issues with which we are all vitally concerned.
Accompanying the exhibition is a full-color catalogue with essays by the curators and Declan McGonagle, director of the Dublin City Arts Centre and past IMMA director.

With an evenhanded presentation of avant-garde rebels, salon bigwigs and mainstream favorites, an international exhibition recaptures the breadth and variety of visual expression at the dawn of the last century.
The exhibition now at the Guggenheim Museum and co-organized with London's Royal Academy of Arts, "1900: Art at the Crossroads," offers perhaps the most daring--and most fundamental--challenge to the conventional understanding of the roots of 20th-century art.
Kicking off with a core group of works that were exhibited in the Exposition Decennale, the international art show at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle or World's Fair, the curators present a raucous mix of styles and approaches that proves that the turn of the 20th century was every bit as pluralistic as today.

A new exhibition, Comic Art: The Paris Salon in Caricature, at the Getty Center from November 18, 2003 through February 15, 2004, examines the wit, wisdom, and scathing commentary of these graphic satirists during their heyday, from the 1830s through the turn of the century.
The caricaturists' main target remained the Salon and its focus on the staid old-line art establishment, but innovative "avant-garde" artists also took their share of satirical punches.  Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet were among the popular targets.
Works of art were often the subject of caricature, as were art dealers, auction houses, galleries, and their eager customers—the entire spectrum of the art world in 1800s France.
