A definition of art that seems correct to many Americans in the 21st century is likely to differ greatly from definitions of art in non-Western cultures, in tribal societies, and in other historical periods.
We could speak instead of “art that is displayed in museums,” “art that is taught in art history classes,” or “art that art critics can interpret.” These expressions would encompass tribal objects and give them an intellectual value, no matter who made them or what their intent may have been.

This can be done by a simple trip to a museum or glance at a picture book or even hearing about a work or the modus operandi of an artist.
A good historian of art is a good artist in that he too composes with his synthetic engine, a brain that moves in the same manner across the path of a delighted creation by advancing theory about how the artist presents the mold, applies the deep understanding as Tolstoy alluded.
The art historian, a curator, takes a stab at composition by filling a room or demarking a venue where the collection in his mind made manifest by the placement of pieces indicative of his vision in the context of community at that time and place also reveals the historian as artist.

Art historians are often key players in the international trade in cultural property and have a responsibility to distinguish the licit trade from illicit trade and to suppress the latter.
An art historian who made his or her reputation through knowledge and connoisseurship of the work of a given artist or culture has a moral obligation to these sources to expose fakes and forgeries when to do so comes within his or her competence and can be established beyond a reasonable doubt.
For an art historian to turn away from this activity on the grounds that he or she does not have the time is to pass this obligation on to others who may or may not be competent to expose the crimes involved and the effect could be a diminution of the quality of the profession.

The scholarly productivity of an art historian should be regarded as being directly related to such factors as the mission of the department and the institution, the nature of the faculty member's research, access to source materials necessary to its advancement, and the availability of institutional support of for research materials and necessary travel.
