Art needlework - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Art needlework was a type of surface embroidery popular in the later nineteenth century under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Art needlework emphasized delicate shading in satin stitch with silk thread accompanied by a number of novelty stitches, in sharp contrast with the counted-thread technique of the brightly colored Berlin wool work needlepoint craze of the mid-nineteenth century.
Art needlework was introduced to America at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

May Morris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Morris himself is credited with the resurrection of free-form embroidery in the style which would be termed art needlework.
Art needlework emphasized freehand stitching and delicate shading in silk thread, and was thought to encourage self-expression in the needleworker; this contrasted sharply with the brightly coloured Berlin wool work needlepoint and its "paint by numbers" aesthetic which had gripped much of home embroidery in the mid-nineteenth century.
May Morris was active in the Royal School of Art Needlework (now Royal School of Needlework), founded as a charity in 1872 under the patronage of Princess Helena to maintain and develop the art of needlework through structured apprenticeships.

Winner of the Seattle Art Museum's Betty Bowen Special Recognition Award in 2001, Bjarnadottir is a textile artist whose pieces are grounded in Iceland's traditions of knitting, embroidering and crocheting.
Permeating her art on a more basic level, however, is a very personal, positive, non-ideological sort of feminism, one that reflects a background dominated by the society and culture of women rather than a political stance.
Her art is edgy but not pushy, maintaining instead a low profile, lying in wait to challenge your mind and eye.

The original purpose of the Purnell Museum was to house folk-art needlework wrought by Julia A. Purnell, an artist from Snow Hill.
Purnell's art was classified as "folk-art" because each piece was designed by the artist, and often created without a pattern.
In centuries past, young girls were routinely taught to create numerous kinds of stitches and needlework; the samplers, laces, quilts and clothing they produced were meant to prepare them for a life of work in the home.
