Conceptual Art Online - Christina Barton - Traces and Boundaries
While art photographers were arguing their case for a place for photography in the pantheon of high art, on the grounds of its intrinsic formal qualities, post-object artists were merely using the camera as a recording device in their moves away from that institutional framework.
Thus the utter separation of the art object from reality, on which modernist autonomy depends, was undone and the world was brought into the work in ways which forced the abandonment of a definition of art as being discrete, bounded, separate.
Art's mediating role in the social realm was one focus for post-object artists' critique, another was to examine the status of the art object in both ontological and epistemological terms.

 What is pychologically, ART?
Art includes such relationships as between viewer and art object, artist and viewer, society and artist, and the unconscious and the conscious.
Art thus includes the perceptual cognitive factors of the unconscious and psychophysical sensory mechanisms of the human body.
Acclaimed aesthetic objects of all the artists of a time and place then combine to provide the aesthetic climate and culture for the group at-large, which in turn becomes standards of excellence or acceptance by which to judge future (and reevaluation of past) works of art.

Marcel Duchamp's Readymades : the status and function of the art object - an article from cavant-garde.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The Bicycle Wheel extended the status of the art object by encompassing into the art realm found objects that needed only to be taken out of their everyday context, re-organised and renamed.
Although The Bicycle Wheel had extended the status of the art object to include a vast array of everyday objects, this status had also been negated in the way that the art object now had to be viewed in consideration of the influence of an institutional frame.
And by this questioning, Duchamp both extended the status of the art object to include items from everyday life, and negated its status by forcing the viewer to carefully reconsider the very nature of the institutional framework that supported it.

UNC Writing Center Handout | Art History
Although art historians vary in their approaches to art, there are a few common approaches that form the backbone of the field.
Most art historians include formal analysis at some point in their essays, so there are a lot of examples to look at in the textbook and other readings, but you will probably have to be more in-depth than they are.
Art historians study iconography and iconology so often that they have compiled reference texts that list many of the famous works that show particular themes--you might use these as a resource, so ask the art librarian about them.

Art Business News: Art-to-object movement gains momentum: once derided as stark, cold and impersonal, Minimalism's ...
Minimalism exalted the literalness of the art object, be it a perfect cube or a repetitive geometric series, and changed the art object's relationship with the viewer--first and foremost by knocking sculpture off its pedestal in the same way that Modern paintings had cast off their frames.
Rather, the art object is a singular form, or a repeated form that takes on a singular affect.
Minimalist art objects were made from the materials of modern life: neon and fluorescent tubing, mirrors, bricks, stainless steel beams, cloth, vinyl, metal plates, Styrofoam, Formica, Plexiglas, galvanized iron and aluminum, robber--the physical properties of which become a part of the aesthetic experience.

Books : A Minimal Future? : Art as Object 1958-1968   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Art As Object 1958-1968, which accompanies a major exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, offers a redefinition of Minimalism by situating it in the context of the concurrent aesthetics of modernist abstraction, pop art, and nascent ideas of conceptual art.
Minimalism is presented as a range of strategies that propelled new definitions of the structure, form, material, image, and production of the art object and renegotiated its relationship to space and to the spectator.
Diedrich Diedrichsen addresses the relationship between minimal art and music; Jonathan Flatley focuses on Donald Judd and Andy Warhol; Timothy Martin considers perfomance in relation to minimal art; James Meyer examines East and West Coast practices of Minimalism; and Anne Rorimer discusses the relationship of minimal to conceptual art.

Exponents of Conceptual Art said that artistic production should serve artistic knowledge and that the art object is not an end in itself.
Because Conceptual Art is so dependent upon the text (or discourse) surrounding it, it is strongly related to numerous other movements of the last century.

CONTEMPLATING THE ART OBJECT IN CYBERSPACE CULTURE, Komputerkunst, 1998
While I recognize the value of the high tech object including so-called cyberspace art, I believe the value of the art object has been relegated to a second class citizenship with the emerging digital culture.
Internet arts sites that are presented as works of art in and of themselves must not be confused with those sites that represent or point to art objects that exist in a different medium elsewhere, such as in a museum or in a private collection.
The fact that one may create art whose existence as art remains entirely within the sphere of cyberspace does not diminish the value of creating and experiencing art objects in three dimensional space.

The Aesthetic Hazard Project is concerned with the spaces outside the art world; as a logical consequence of working with these spaces it became evident that even though anything inside an art exhibition space—art gallery, museum, etc.— could be art, not all the objects in those spaces are art.
This project serves to identify objects that, under certain circumstances of art history, exhibition context, or viewer decision, could be selected as potential candidates for consideration as art objects.
By placing a Nonart Object Designation on these objects, they are clearly identified as not appropriate objects for consideration as art within the context of the exhibition space.
