and reservations: 518-828-0131, $10/8 DownTown Ensemble will present Artamidae, a set of pieces by Australian composer and performer, Ron Nagorcka in which he samples the fabulous songsters of Australia, especially of his home island of Tasmania and sets them for an ensemble of flute, clarinet, electric guitar, mandolin, trombone, didjeridu (an aboriginal instrument), and keyboards.
Peter Zummo, from New York, trombonist and a founding member of the DownTown Ensemble has been commissioned to compose a new piece for the group: Teapot/Heatsink (2002) takes its name from the phrase "Think of teapot as heatsink," which is an admonition to make a small contribution to energy conservation.

Dragon Guild :: View topic - Ravens and Crows and Magpies, Oh My!!
The Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) and the Currawong (genus Strepera) are both members of the family Artamidae and there for not Corvids as such.
All of these birds are members of the Parvorder Corvida, which along with the familys Corvidae and Artamidae also contains 22 other families (and a side note for Dream: this includes the Australian Lyrebird and those little Pardalots that nest in our eaves...the ones with the beautiful BIGvoices).
So, anyway, while the Australian Raven and Currawong may not be members of the family Corvidae they are, like the Raven and Crow, all members of the Parvorder Corvida.
