Archaeology - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Once artefacts and structures have been excavated, or collected from surface surveys, it is necessary to properly study them, to gain as much data as possible.
At its most basic, the artefacts found are cleaned, catalogued and compared to published collections, in order to classify them typologically and to identify other sites with similar artefact assemblages.
They seek to stop looting by informing prospective artefact collectors of the provenance of these goods, and by alerting people who live near archaeological sites of the threat of looting and the danger that it poses to science and their own heritage.

Technology and design share a common concern for generating artefacts that are intended to transform the world from what it is to something better: both are concerned with intervention, innovation and change.
Nevertheless, although artefacts are produced, their novelty, shared interest and usefulness may not be easily demonstrated or assessed.
In contrast, in projects where the work is progressed through the creation of and interaction with artefacts, issues, goals, and priorities may change throughout the project resulting in a stream of outcomes, thereby never settling on a specific problem or yielding a "final" solution.

 Taphonomy of artefacts
The resistance of stone artefacts to physical and chemical destruction is why they are often the only evidence of humans to have survived from remote prehistoric periods.
The crumbling and rounding of edges and the discolouration and roughening of artefact surfaces which accompanied the weathering process could be expected to obscure and erase many of the attributes used to identify and classify artefacts.
The rate at which artefacts weather is largely dependent on the nature of the stone on which they are made and the conditions of the deposit in which they rested.

 Accounting for an Unseen Artefact
Essence of the Pattern: This pattern is concerned with the manner in which one actor can make available (or not) details of a local artefact (for example, a computer system) and their interaction with it when involved in communicating with another actor.
This focuses on situations in which the artefact is unavailable to the second actor as communication is through a remote channel such as the telephone.
In a situation where the artefact is a computer system and the one actor is requiring details of the other in order to input information or carry out requests it may be particularly useful to design a system which is more 'visible' to the other.

The basic form and detail of Artefact are in the style of the late Victorian “Moderns” such as Century Expanded, DeVinne, and Modern No. 20.
This is because in these styles the thin, rounded curves of lowercase letters such as p and n join their vertical strokes at a smooth tangent — in effect, there is an “o” in the middle of the b, d, p and q.

 Prehistoric “plane” flies !
In short: the artefact behaved as a plane was meant to behave.
It underlines the basic problem that this artefact is just that: an anomaly, which does allow for speculation, but which in itself can never prove it is indeed a plane.
Still, being able to demonstrate that the artefact behaves like an airplane and is more of an airplane than an insect, should give warning to the archaeologists that further study of the artefact is required.

Digital imaging artefacts are unwelcome and unnatural elements or distortions in the reproduction.
A variation on this theme is “Christmas tree lights” or colour aliasing artefacts which are a function of the way that colour filtration is laid down on the sensor and is particularly apparent when an image is greatly enlarged.
Note also that because compression is done last, image artefacts such as sharpening and colour saturating are likely to be compounded.

The Archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe and the Archaeological Study of Tobacco Consumption
Perhaps one of the most obvious examples of this is that both tobacco and related artefacts became incorporated into the legal framework and were subject to a variety of forces such as taxation.
This relationship between artefact and function has been assumed to be unproblematical, largely because the pipes are perceived as belonging to a well understood 'familiar' past.
Like all artefacts clay pipe have life histories or cycles (Gojak and Stuart1999: 44-46) and could enter the archaeological record at any stage during their life.

I was brought up to stick with artefact, much as the incompatibility with artificial annoyed me, and I was surprised to see you use artifact.
In the newsletter I was inconsistent, using artefact one week (while noting that Americans spelled it artifact), but the next week accidentally spelling it artifact (I put in as evidence for the defence a saying of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”).
So, if we’re arguing from etymology, artefact wins without a contest, but then to be consistent we would have to write arteficial and artefice.

 Public Artefact
Essence of the Pattern: This pattern is concerned with the use of a public artefact (for example, a large display monitor, notice board) which serves as a shared object which provides a group of workers with some form of overall perspective on their activity.
In a situation, particularly where a complex task is broken down into tightly coupled component parts the use of a public artefact demonstrating the overall picture (and making available each part) can be useful in promoting dependability in the system.
The public persistence of the artefact means that it is always available as a resource and it should promote teamwork as workers collaborate an parts on the activity that are shown to be connected, and provides an opportunity to oversee and monitor one another's work.
