Artemio Ricarte was born on October 20, 1866, in Batac, North Ilocos state, Republic of the Philippines.
Ricarte was a true patriot and a national hero of the Philippines.

What came to be known as the Ricarte Movement developed from the efforts of General Artemio Ricarte and a few others to revive the Revolution.
Resistance had became fragmented and localized and Ricarte, despite his anti-Americanism, did not have stature nor the vision to reunify the struggle.
Ricarte was captured in April, 1904 and sentence six years in prison for conspiracy and subversion.

To prepare for Bonifacio Day I went over the various printed memoirs that have references to the Supremo of the Katipunan.
These were Artemio Ricarte, Santiago Alvarez, Telesforo Canseco, Emilio Aguinaldo, Carlos Ronquillo, etc. It was very difficult to piece together a composite picture, so I decided to share something by Pio Valenzuela, who was interrogated by the Spanish authorities from September to October 1896.
Part of Valenzuela's testimony states that Bonifacio "frequently said that the president of the French Republic was once a flsmith, giving his hearers to understand that, although he is only a porter, he might one day rise in like manner to that position in the Philippines."
