Topic: Artephius

Artephius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Artephius is the name to which a number of alchemical and magical texts, first extant in Latin, are ascribed.
A Renaissance tradition held that Artephius had been born in the first or second century and died in the twelfth, thanks to having discovered the alchemical elixir that made it possible to prolong life.
Artephius is sometimes identified with Apollonius of Tyana.

Artephius writes in paragraph 30: "Being moved with a generous mind, I have determined to declare all things truly, and sincerely, that you may not want anything for the perfecting of this stone of the philosophers.
Although Artephius has not mentioned iron, many adepts have claimed that iron is an essential ingredient; therefore we may assume that in the works of the philosophers, antimony and iron are essential to bring success in the art.
Artephius speaks of three different fires to be used in the art, but actual fire is not used, but ordinary heat is one fire, "our mercury" is another, and the water mentioned in the "Sophic Fire" is the third, because of the power it has of burning, calcinating, or bringing changes about.

Fifthly, authors hide their secrets by means of special letters, devised by their own ingenuity and will, and different from those which are anywhere in use.
Sixthly, actual letters are not used but other geomantic figures which function as letters according to the arrangement of points and marks—and this method also Artephius used in his science.
Seventhly, there is still a better way of obscuring which is comprehended in the ars notaria which is the art of noting and writing with whatever brevity we wish and with whatever rapidity we desire—and by this means many secrets are hidden in the books of the Latins.

The “Philosophers’ Stone” was also called the “Elixir of Life”, which has the virtue of being able to cure any of the diseases of mankind, thus assuring perfect health and a longevity far beyond the normal span that is hoped for by man.
Artephius, an alchemist of the twelfth century, wrote in his treatise entitled The Secret Book that up to that time he had already lived a thousand years by aid of the Elixir.
In fact, each of these names could describe what the matter in the flask appeared like during the processes that took place at various stages of the alchemical process.

There are at least three probable sources of the alchemic tradition in the West: either it was continued through the works of the Roman alchemists, or it was re-learned by the Europeans at the time of the Crusades or it received influence from the Moors at the time they ruled over Spain.
Whatever the case, the first important treatise is of the 12th century, Artephius' "The Art Of Prolonging Human Life".

The two alchemical treatises we are looking at, the "Secret Book of Artephius" and the "Donum Dei," were written in the twelfth and the fifteenth centuries respectively.
Recalling your chronology, you will realize that the first was written around the time of the first influx of Arabic science into Latin Christendom while the second was composed quite a bit later, under the influence of Renaissance neoplatonism and hermeticism.
Are such categories helpful, or might you describe alchemy in terms independent of such definitions?
