Topic: Artesian basin

Great Artesian Basin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The basin is the largest and deepest artesian basin in the world.
The basin is 3000 metres (10,000 ft) deep in places and has been estimated to contain between 9 and 65 cubic kilometres (7 to 52 billion acre-feet) of groundwater.
The basin is an important source of water for cattle raising.

Tas Walker's Biblical Geology - Application to GAB
Together with some associated peripheral basins it covers a significant portion of the Australian continent and is, indeed, the largest artesian basin of its kind in the world.
Artesian water is held under pressure in porous sandstone aquifers capped by impervious shale beds.
At the edges of the basin, and to the east of centre where the strata have been pushed up, it can be seen that the stratigraphy is eroded to form the present land surface.

Artesian aquifer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater that will flow upwards out of a well without the need for pumping.
In recharging aquifers, this happens because the water table at its recharge zone is at a higher elevation than the head of the well.
Artesian wells were named after the former province of Artois in France, where many artesian wells were drilled by Carthusian monks since 1126 (see also

GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN [Great Artesian Basin] c.670,000 sq mi (1,735,300 sq km), between the Eastern Highlands and the Western Plateau, E central Australia, extending S from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, to NE South Australia and N New South Wales.
The arid basin receives water from the Eastern Highlands as rain is absorbed by porous rock and flows underground toward the center of the saucer-shaped basin.
The highly mineralized artesian water cannot be used for agriculture.

 The Great Artesian Basin
The Basin covers a total area of over 1 711 000 square km and it has an estimated total water storage of 64 900 million megalitres (a megalitre is one million litres and is equivalent to about half the water in an Olympic swimming pool).
The Great Artesian Basin was formed between 100 and 250 million years ago and consists of alternating layers of waterbearing (permeable) sandstone aquifers and non-waterbearing (impermeable) siltstones and mudstones.
Dating of the artesian waters has given ages of almost 2 million years for the oldest waters, which occur in the south-western area of the Basin.

Australia's Artesian Basin - $14 Billion down the drain each year - On Line Opinion - 15/8/1999
The traditional view of the Great Artesian Basin, which is the basis of government policies and which is taught in schools, is that the aquifer is a porous rock where the water content is continuously replenished by slow seepage from the strata outcrops in the uplands to the east.
The present interpretation is based on the assumption that the Jurassic sandstones are porous, and that the porosity is unchanged by the discharge of water from the basin, or by the drop in water pressure.
It may be an estimate of all of the captive water in all of the saturated sandstones, which is something radically different to the potentially recoverable water in the joints and fissures in the aquifers.

The community of native species dependent on natural discharge of groundwater from the Great Artesian Basin
Excessive extraction of artesian groundwater from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) has led to both the extinction of springs and a reduction in water flow of many of the remaining springs.
Therefore, the decline in artesian water pressure and the resultant degradation and extinction of spring communities means that The community of native species dependent on natural discharge of groundwater from the Great Artesian Basin is eligible for listing as Vulnerable under this criterion.
It is hoped that the better management of artesian bores will increase the pressure of the artesian groundwater, removing one of the key threats to the survival of the artesian springs.

 Capping and Piping Artesian Bores
In New South Wales, the discovery of the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) in the late 19th century led to the construction of many artesian bores and the provision of assured water supplies of acceptable salinity on several stock routes previously classed as unreliable.
The Great Artesian Basin, is recognised as one of the world’s largest underground water reservoirs, and is estimated to hold 8,700 million megalitres or 17,000 times the volume of Sydney Harbour.
Artesian bores will be rehabilitated and wasteful bore drains will be replaced with efficient piped systems so that water can be controlled and used only when and where required.
