  artesian well
Well that is supplied with water rising naturally from an underground water-saturated rock layer (aquifer).
Such a well may be drilled into an aquifer that is confined by impermeable rocks both above and below.
Artesian wells are often overexploited because their water is fresh and easily available, and they eventually become unreliable.

Well - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Two classes may be distinguished: shallow or ordinary wells, sunk through a permeable strata until an impermeable strata is reached; and deep and Artesian wells, the latter named from Artois in France, which are sunk through an impermeable strata down into a water-bearing strata which overlies an impermeable strata.
In 1858 a well at Neusalwerk near Minden, had reached the depth of 2288 ft. At Bourne, Lincolnshire, there is a well 95 ft. deep, which yields over half a million gallons of water per day, the pressurebeing sufficient to supply the town and force the water to the tops of the highest houses.

artesian well deep drilled well through which water is forced upward under pressure.
The water in an artesian well flows from an aquifer, which is a layer of very porous rock or sediment, usually sandstone, capable of holding and transmitting large quantities of water.
The geologic conditions necessary for an artesian well are an inclined aquifer sandwiched between impervious rock layers above and below that trap water in it.

 Bedrock (Artesian, Drilled) Well Design
Some water quality characteristics in bedrock wells, such as bacterial quality, are improved due to the longer time required for the water to percolate through the soil and into the bedrock, and the tighter construction of a bedrock well casing due to superior materials.
For newly installed bedrock wells, or where well pumps have been recently replaced, it is most important to clear the well of rock cuttings and surface dirt before chlorinating the well or testing for bacteria.
The well may have to be continuously pumped for days (or weeks, in a few new well cases) before this cleaning process is complete.

 Handbook of Texas Online:
Wells were also touted in promotional brochures, such as the ad for the town of Sarita, Texas, which estimated that an artesian well would irrigate 100 to 200 acres.
Water from artesian wells was included in the general irrigation act of 1913 (see WATER LAW), and in May 1931 the legislature passed a law to prevent the waste of artesian water, which had become an important source of water supply for numerous cities and irrigation projects.
Though the use of wells remained the property of the individual owner, increased government regulation such as the issuing of permits and possibilities of restrictions became the focus of debate.

Artesian aquifer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An artesian aquifer is a confined aquifer containing groundwater that will flow upwards out of a well without the need for pumping.
In recharging aquifers, this happens because the water table at its recharge zone is at a higher elevation than the head of the well.
Artesian wells were named after the former province of Artois in France, where many artesian wells were drilled by Carthusian monks since 1126

 KGS--Meade County--Artesian Water
The piezometric surface, or pressure-indicating surface, of an artesian aquifer is an imaginary surface that everywhere coincides with the static level, or head, of the water in the aquifer.
One observation well (100), which penetrates the artesian water outside the flowing well district at a considerable distance from any possible influence by pumping, shows only a slight fluctuation in water level during the entire period of record, and these small fluctuations do not seem to be correlative with periods of rainfall and drought.
The irrigation well was pumped at a rate of approximately 850 gallons a minute and the first period of pumping indicated on the graph represents the first pumping of the irrigation well after a winter of rest.

Some artesian wells, however, have been "abandoned." Basically an abandoned artesian well is one that has no flow control on it or the well casing is deteriorated and water is flowing or seeping onto or under the ground.
Abandoned wells are plugged by pumping grout cement through PVC pipe into the bottom of the well.
Presently, activity in the Abandoned Artesian Well Plugging Program is diminishing, mainly for two reasons: increased awareness of water conservation and development of much of the agricultural land in Seminole County.

Years later an account of the drilling of an artesian well is recounted in the following personal recording by Harlan Buss with the reference to the first Artesian well drilled in Sheldon in April, 1906.
Apparently after the drill line had been raised, unbeknownst to the well driller, the rock had shifted enough so that when the casing was lowered to the forty foot level, it did not meet with the hole that had been previously drilled to allow it to go beyond.
However, since the drill foreman didn't have his “heart” at the well, and elected to discontinue getting the casing any deeper than this forty-foot level, when the well came in, an unbelievable amount of water came up form the outside of the casing.

Water well - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These wells are likely to be created with specialized earth-moving equipment, and are usually lined with a casing composed of factory-made cylindrical concrete shells, synthetic (PVC) plastic water pipe, or steel pipe, or a combination of these materials.
Water enters the well primarily by oozing out of the earth into either a constructed screen or open borehole placed at the bottom end of the casing; the gravel is commonly packed around screen material to help filter the water of sand and earth, helping to clarify the ground water entering the well.
Well water is drawn via mechanical pump (such as an electric submersible pump) from a source below the surface of the earth.

If a well is located on property owned by a public entity such as a city, county, or other governmental entity (excluding publicly owned utilities), and the cost of plugging the well is less than $20,000, the District may elect to equally share the cost of plugging the well with the governmental entity.
Wells which are considered an imminent hazard to public health, safety, and welfare; or wells within Water Resource Caution Areas (WRCA); or wells which the District has agreed to plug with cooperative cost-share funds shall be placed first in the priority order of plugging.
Wells which pose a lesser threat to the water resources (i.e., only waste water) will be grouped in the lower priority category but may be moved up in priority during any fiscal year if other contractual well plugging is proceeding in the areas of these wells, making their plugging financially advantageous.

Arsenic in well water related to atherosclerosis
Scientists have measured the amount of arsenic in well water in the region since the early 1960s.
Three indices of long-term exposure to arsenic - how long someone consumed artesian well water, the average arsenic concentration in that water, and the cumulative arsenic exposure - were significantly associated with prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis in a dose-dependent relationship (meaning the amount of disease increased as the amount of arsenic increased).
Researchers divided subjects into three groups based on arsenic exposure levels and found that those with the highest exposure had three times the risk of atherosclerosis as people who were not exposed to arsenic.
