In the May 1992 rating decision, the RO considered the veteran's arthralgia and arthritis of multiple joints as separate disabilities and denied service connection for osteoarthritis of multiple joints was denied and the denial of service connection for arthralgia of the shoulders was continued.
The veteran's accredited representative further contends that the veteran's diagnosed arthralgia of the shoulders was actually a form of arthritis, and that both arthralgia and arthritis should be service-connected because the veteran had acute arthritis of the left elbow and right hip, secondary to meningitis, during service.
Arthralgia and arthritis were not incurred in or aggravated by the veteran's active service.

Arthralgia in South Indian patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during treatment with pyrazinamide and rifampicin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Arthralgia was the major adverse reaction encountered in a clinical trial of the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis with three short-course regimens containing pyrazinamide in South Indian patients.
Arthralgia was reported in 38% of 363 rifampicin patients and 68% of 179 non-rifampicin patients, highly significant difference (p<0.001).
The mean concentration during the daily phase of treatment in patients with arthralgia (0.482 mmoles/litre) was similar to that in those without arthralgia 0.484 mmoles/litre), while that in the rifampicin patients (0.476 mmoles/litre) was significantly lower (p=0.03) than that in the non-rifampicin patients (0.495 mmoles/litre).

Nat' Academies Press, Adverse Effects of Pertussis and Rubella Vaccines (1991)
Arthropathy encompasses arthralgia (subjective pain in a joint or joints), stiffness (with arthralgia, commonly referred to as rheumatism), and arthritis (objective findings of swelling, redness, heat, or limitation of motion).
The combining of arthralgia and arthritis of any kind and the cross-sectional and self-reported nature of National Health Interview Survey data do not permit accurate assessment of the prevalence of chronic or recurrent arthritis in the U.S. population.
This study, unlike the previous one by Swartz and colleagues (1971), distinguished between acute arthritis and arthralgia and indicated that the former was rarer, did not occur before age 16 years, and was manifest in only 4 percent (7 of 178) of persons ages 16 through 25 years.

Arthralgia occurs in numerous conditions, including polymyositis, ulcerative colitis, hyperlipoproteinaemia and synovitis (Fig.1).
Peripheral joint arthralgia accompanies the enteropathic arthropathies (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and Whipple's disease).
Arthralgias also occur in type IV hyperlipoproteinaemia, but despite the joint pain and tenderness, synovitis is not detectable.

DDW: Probiotic VSL#3 Improves Althralgia Associated With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Arthralgia is a common extraintestinal manifestation of IBD appearing in 10 to 25 percent of IBD patients.
At baseline and week 12, the investigators assessed patients for IBD using the Truelove-Witts or Harvey-Bradshaw score, and for arthralgia using Ritchie scoring, with joints assessed separately and graded for tenderness on a 0-3 scale.
Twelve subjects withdrew due from the study -- 2 due to the treatment's taste, 3 due to spontaneous improvement in symptoms, 2 due to deterioration of general well-being that was not IBD-related, and 5 due to non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms.

Could arthralgia be described this way ( question on rash)??
I have a lot of pain in joint areas, but no swelling, redness, etc. The areas in my ankles, elbows, knees, and jaw ache and have a feeling of warmth like it is coming from inside, but not actually warm to the touch.
Whenever I've read about arthralgia or arthritis, I always see "warmth in the joints" as part of the description.
Thus, with 'no literal warmth to touch' and 'no pain on movement', it is still possible to have arthralgia.

An Analysis of Chinese Herb Prescriptions for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Dampness-dominated arthralgia most often affects the lower part of the body and is characterized by swelling and stiffness of the joints, and accompanying sensations of numbness; it may correspond to a middle stage of rheumatoid arthritis (that is, after the disease has become chronic, with less variability of affected joints).
This is a patent medicine indicated for arthralgia associated with stiffness and numbness of the limbs.
The herbs in these two formulas are not specific for arthralgia, but, instead, are aimed at treating internal deficiencies that contribute to susceptibility to this and other diseases and that allow further progression of the diseases rather than spontaneous remission.
