Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) is a concept album by British rock band The Kinks, released in late 1969.
The songs describe the England that Arthur once knew, the promise of life in Australia for one of his sons, the emptiness of his superficially comfortable life in his home "Shangri-La", the resolve of the British people in World War II and the death of his brother in World War I, among other things.
The lead character Arthur is a carpet layer, and he and his family's plight in the opportunity-poor setting of post-war England is depicted.

They could have forgotten about making cohesive, "veddy British" albums and gone back to simply putting together album-length collections of unrelated songs.

cool hand bak: And This Was Their Finest Hour
Hopefully I don't have to tell you that The Kinks' Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire is one of greatest albums ever recorded.
I think what amazed me first about Arthur was the extraordinary number of tones and moods the album moves through, with the lyrics and melodies sure, but with Davies' singing and the band's playing as well.
Arthur is the album's greatest lyrical achievement, moving at it does from one immortal line to the next.

Arthur manages to neatly strike one of the toughest balances out there; it is both a worthy message and a fun bit of music to listen to.
In many ways, the world that Arthur presents is an analog of the world of today, and what Ray Davies and company had to say about it can bring us some understanding of where we are and what in the hell we can do about it.
Arthur, in addition to being an excellent piece of music, has a great deal of relevance to who we are today.

Its follow-up, the even more structured Arthur, or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire (1969), might have given Tommy a run for its money if the accompanying made-for-TV movie co-written by Davies hadn't been canceled.
However, as Davies says in the liner notes to the Muswell Hillbillies reissue, "I was terrified of falling into that trap that we'd slipped into in the '60s, where we'd deliver an album and they'd just promote the single.
His dramatic lyrics captured the tiny comedies, tragedies and redemptions of British life.

The Kinks: Arthur ---Ink Blot Magazine
Not a question one usually asks about a rock'n'roll record, for sure, but Arthur was anomalistic in the extreme: released two years into the late-'60s generational schism, The Kinks' second concept album tackled "The Decline and Fall of the British Empire" from the perspective of their parents' generation.
Fusing 1969's lingua franca of psychedelic blues with The Kinks' stubborn infatuation with English music hall, Arthur offers all the variety and adventure of then-emergent progressive rock without sacrificing melody or indulging in obtuse time signatures and chord sequences.
Somwhere in the middle is "Shangri-La," a potrait of a generation grown middle-aged and pitiable, paralyzed by fear of modern life and left with only indoor plumbing and suburban sprawl to show for its noble struggles.

The Kinks were once again invited to perform on "Ready Steady Go," and appeared on the cover of NME and other important British magazines.
The band's managers had to loan them the money for the second recording session, about 200 pounds (perhaps $1,500 in today's money), as Dave Davies recalls in his autobiography, "Kink." The recording was done at London's IBC Studios in July 1964, once again with Talmy producing and Bobby Graham on drums.
There were to be no overdubs, as that would result in lowered sound quality, and the group had just three hours to get the recording right.
