King Arthur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arthur makes an appearance in a number of well-known Welsh vitae ("Lives") of 6th-century saints: for example, in the Life of Saint Illtud, he is said to be a cousin of that churchman.
Arthur, who is described as his kinsman, agrees to the request, and fulfils the demands of Olwen's giant father Ysbaddaden, which includes his hunt for the great boar Twrch Trwyth, described at length by the author.
In almost all accounts Arthur is said to have been mortally wounded, but to have been taken after the battle to Avalon (sometimes identified with Glastonbury in Somerset, England), where his wounds are healed or his body buried in a chapel.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
In the Dark Ages, Arthur (Clive Owen) is the Roman commander of a band of Sarmatian warriors who, after losing a key battle to the Romans, were forced to join the Empire's Special Forces unit and sent to Britain to defend Roman holdings from the encroaching Saxons and the uprising Britons.
With the Saxons on their heels, Arthur decides to not just rescue the family but hundreds of slaves at the same time--including Guinevere (Keira Knightley) and her mysterious shaman Merlin (Stephen Dillane), who convince Arthur to join the Britons in their fight against the Saxons instead of going home.

 King Arthur Movie Review
King Arthur is the second teaming of super producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Antoine Fuqua (the twosome last collaborated on Training Day), and probably the best compliment I can pay the film is that it isn't the fluffy, disposable actioneer the trailer suggests.
This King Arthur tale took me a little off guard as it trades in the magic and rather dark fantasy elements of John Boorman's outstanding Excalibur, for a more gritty and humanized take on the famed story, bringing to mind films like Braveheart and Gladiator.
Arthur is a torn, tortured soul who is constantly conflicted between duty and conscience.

 King Arthur - the movie
There is no historical key that reduces the legends of Arthur and his court, which accumulated in the middle ages not just in Geoffrey's chronicle and the Welsh Mabinogion but in the French romance cycle and the German epics of Parzival and Tristan, to flat, sombre fact.
Arthur, in the version that has been best known for centuries with its romantic picture of Camelot, its honourable knights who fight tournaments and go in search of adventure, and the tragic death of Arthur in his last battle with his incestuous son, Mordred, is a sad, subtle, poetic legend, full of emotional nuance.
Arthur and Mordred meet for a desperate parlay, after warning their armies to attack at the least sign of a sword being drawn.

Antoine Fuqua’s “King Arthur” is in many ways similar to this summer’s most disappointing movie, “Troy,” in that both films get bogged down by messy action scenes, contrived character conflicts, and the burden of faithfully retelling a famous tale.
We first meet Guinevere well into the second half of the film when Arthur arrives to liberate her and other oppressed Woads held captive by the Roman family they are supposed to protect.
Most war movies don’t allow us to spend a good deal of time with the enemy, but before we can become too attached to the nomadic long-haired tribe, David Franzoni’s story has them burning every village they invade to the point where we just wait for their inevitable slaughter at the final showdown.

Unfortunately for Arthur, the movie has decidedly been set in the 5th century AD, which means that the Roman Empire is on its last breath and that they are pulling out of Britain.
What was most frustrating about this movie is that the creators of this movie go to such lengths to try to trick us into thinking that what we are watching is a true story, while we all know that there is very little water under the bridge.
I have no problem seeing Guinevere (the movie never explains whether she is a princess or any kind of royalty) shooting a bow and arrow, but when she dons her absolutely dreadful war gear and starts killing men by the dozens with a sword, I had to scoff.

Arthur, you see, was actually a great Roman commander who, along with his ever-loyal knights, kept Britain tamed on behalf of the empire.
When victory has finally been secured at the end of the film, Arthur makes an emotional speech to the cheering Britons about how they “were born free men,” while donning his crown to become king, an irony so blatantly missed by the filmmakers that I nearly coughed up my popcorn in a fit of hysterics.
Thus, with no real background on either Arthur’s story or the historical situation, we are told we must care about Arthur’s sudden realization that his people are getting screwed and that only he can do something about it.

 KING ARTHUR Movie Synopsis
For centuries most historians believed that King Arthur was only a legend, but that legend was based on a real hero whose actions changed the face of Britain and the world forever.
Here, Arthur, Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd), Galahad (Hugh Dancy), Bors (Ray Winstone), Tristan, Dagonet and Gawain are forced to confront their traditional enemy: Merlin and his indigenous guerilla armies.
Disdainfully called 'Woads' by the Knights for the Woad plant they use to dye their bodies, Arthur and his Knights will see these guerillas are the soul of Britain, devastated by generations of Roman rule.

Yet as Arthur forges ahead, he comes to realize that his true allegiance is to Britain, rather than Rome.

Arthur himself is a half Briton, half Roman who takes command of a group of Samatian (sp?) cavalrymen guarding Hadrians Wall (historical evidence also points to this being an accurate account).
The hero is struggling with the usual fantasy choice between loyalty to a country and loyalty to his inner sense of what is right, discovering along the way that the country he serves is not what he thought and the "savages" he's been fighting so long are more noble than some of his own people.

Arthur, it seems, was actually Lucius Artorius Castus, and he lived much earlier than we thought—in the Dark Ages.
In this revisionist version, Arthur (Clive Owen) is a reluctant Roman leader who takes his Knights of the Round Table—the usual suspects—on one last mission in Britain, to defend against the invading Saxons, led by Cerdic (Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd), who looks like a yeti and speaks like one, too.
(You can always tell in a movie when something weighty is being intoned—no contractions.) Arthur is fond of saying things like “My faith is what protects me,” but it’s clear that the Round Table squadron—modeled rather too closely on the Wild Bunch—has a big hand in guarding his flank.
