Noyes was a chemistry professor at MIT and its former acting president when Hale persuaded him in 1913 to come on a part-time basis to Caltech, or Throop College of Technology, as it was then known.
Noyes had early recognized the importance of the new field of X-ray crystallography and he encouraged his former MIT graduate student C. Burdick (who was doing postdoctoral research in Europe) to go and study with William Bragg (a future Nobel laureate) in London.
Noyes was constantly on the alert for new developments and new experiments under way in England or on the continent, and equally vigilant about sending his people there to learn about them so that they could bring that expertise back to Caltech.

Arthur Amos Noyes (1904) was born in Newburyport to a family dating back to 1635 in that town.
Because the "other" Noyes (William Albert Noyes, Sr.), who was editor of the Journal of the ACS, was in charge of the establishment of CA, the early contribution of Arthur Amos is often overlooked.
Arthur Clay Cope (1961) was born in 1909 and came to our section in 1945 when he became head of the chemistry department at M.I.T., an office he held until 1965 when he became the first Dreyfus Professor of Chemistry at the Institute.

 Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers - Special Collections - Oregon State University
Noyes had an eye for talent and for promising new fields of research, and it is said that Pauling was Noyes' greatest discovery.
Noyes recognised the importance of X-ray crystal structure analysis from the beginning, and installed X-ray equipment at MIT and Caltech.
Noyes thereupon arranged a Guggenheim fellowship for Pauling's postdoctoral studies in Europe 1926-1927, centred on the Munich Institute of Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951), indicating that a position at Caltech would be available on Pauling's return.

NEWSMAKER: Stephen J. Lippard is the Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry at MIT.
The clothes on the line were collateral damage in Dr. Lippard's fledging chemistry experiment, an interest which ultimately led to him becoming head of the chemistry department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, on Nov. 14, recipient of the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science award.
Lippard, a Pittsburgh native and the Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry at MIT, was recognized for his seminal contribution to helping medical researchers, doctors and scientists understand Cisplatin, the anti-cancer drug that has proven particularly effective against ovarian and testicular forms of the disease.

This year’s dinner included a tribute to Arthur W. Adamson, emeritus professor of chemistry, who passed away in July 2003 at the age of 83.
This year’s dinner also marked the establishment of the Arthur Adamson Postdoctoral Recognition Award, which will be given annually to an outstanding postdoctoral fellow in honor of Adamson.
