Originally, the polyketide  theory was based on structural analysis of an encyclopedic catalogue of phenolic natural products but Rod was among the first to experimentally validate the concept by exploiting the use of isotopic labeled putative precursors, their feeding to microorganisms and the detection and location of the label in the resulting natural product.
During the nystatin project, the use of poly-trimethylsilylation as a vehicle for increasing the volatility, stability and solubility (in organic solvents) of such polyhydroxy compounds was developed and applied.
Rod returned to Australia along with Birch as one of the foundation appointees and played a major consultative role in the design of, what is still, one of the most attractive and functional chemical research buildings in Australia.

We are fortunate that Seeman began his series as soon as he did, for nine of his autobiographees - Derek H. Barton, Arthur J. Birch, Melvin Calvin, Egbert Havinga, Michael J. Dewar, Herman Mark, Tetsue Nozoe, Vladimir Prelog, and William S. Johnson - have already died during the publication of the series to date.
With great candor and flashes of humor, Johnson describes his travels, honors, and awards such as the Roger Adams (1977) and Arthur C. Cope Awards (1989), hobbies (tennis, gymnastics, and hiking), his research and that of his colleagues, controversies, and consulting, editorial, and writing activities.
