  Arthur Bliss
Born in 1891 of an English father and American mother, Arthur Bliss was destined to display characteristics of both nations, his profound romanticism balanced by an unquenchable energy and optimism.
With the return of peace, Bliss’ career took off rapidly as a composer of what were, for British audiences, startlingly new pieces often for unusual ensembles, such as a concerto for wordless tenor voice, piano and strings, and ‘Rout’ for soprano and chamber orchestra, in which the voice sings phonetic sounds rather than words.
Bliss was always an ambitious, prolific composer, and some of his works were clearly intended for a wider international audience than they actually received.

Sir Arthur Bliss : The Film Music of Sir Arthur Bliss - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Sir Arthur Bliss is best remembered in film music circles for the score he composed for the 1936 science fiction epic Things to Come.
Bliss himself recorded his concert suite from Things to Come in the mid-1930s, and again, in stereo, in the middle to late 1950s, and the latter was available in several vinyl editions and at least two CD versions.
The remainder of the CD contains Bliss' "Welcome the Queen" and his theme from the documentary television series War in the Air, as well as a 17-minute suite derived from his never-used music from the 1944 film Caesar and Cleopatra, all of which fill in significant holes in the composer's film-related output.

Bliss did not have as strong or distinctive a musical voice as his English contemporaries Delius and Walton did, but his style is no mere matter of a scissors-and-paste collage of various musical idioms current at the time.
Bliss was part-American by parentage, Donohoe is English but presumably of Irish extraction, I myself am Scottish and happy to hear how the orchestra from which I first learned about orchestral music has developed into a world-class band, but probably not well placed to assess the comparative romanticism of Americans.
Bliss wrote it on commission from the British Council for the 1939 New York World's Fair and it was premired by Solomon with the New York Philharmonic under Adrian Boult.

Arthur Bliss - Piano Concerto, Piano Sonato, Concerto For Two Pianos : album review
The Naxos British piano concerto series moves on to examine the work of Arthur Bliss, whose contribution to the genre is a big-boned, virtuosic piece lasting almost forty minutes.
The concerto was commissioned by the British Council for the New York World's Fair, dedicated to Solomon and described by Bliss as "what is loosely called romantic".
With a statement of intent from the piano in octaves at the outset, Bliss announces a style following in the tradition of big sounding piano concertos from Liszt and Tchaikovsky, but the melodic material is pained by an unmistakably English brush.
