Marion Boyars Publishers was to be found in a narrow building on a side-street in Putney, a busy little London village south of the Thames, beside a men’s hairstyling salon and a Pakistani take-away restaurant.
Marion Boyars, director of her firm, was a tiny woman of indeterminate age and bright, sharp eyes.

It was always a pleasure to receive a letter from Marion Boyars, who has died at the age of 71.
Marion Boyars Ltd - along with Peter Owen and her former business partner John Calder - was one of the last great avant-garde houses, issuing books quite oblivious to fashion and commercial pressure.
And she was always a defiant internationalist; her second husband, Arthur Boyars, with whom she enjoyed a long and happy marriage, was an accomplished linguist and music scholar, and together they spoke Russian, German, French and Italian.

Preceding much of the work for which he is best known, Opium is now regarded as one of Cocteau’s most important works and a major document in the literature of drug addiction in its own right.
An ‘extraordinary mélange of fact, fantasy and aphorism’ (Arthur Boyars), Opium describes his extraordinary hallucinations and the price his ‘perfect hours’ came to exact.
