Arthur Cameron Corbett, 3rd Baron Rowallan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Captain Arthur Cameron Corbett, 3rd Baron Rowallan ( December 17, 1919 – 1993) was a British aristocrat most notable for successfully having his second marriage annulled in 1970 by a court on the grounds that his wife, April Ashley, a transsexual woman, was a man under then-current UK law.
The argument was accepted, and the case served as a precedent for all such cases until the Gender Recognition Act 2004 was passed, which provided said needed legal framework for changing a person's legal gender.

Gender Recognition Bill   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Bill is a response to several court rulings, notably from the European Court of Human Rights and House of Lords, saying that the law as it stands was a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act 1998.
The current precedent dates back to 1963, when Arthur Cameron Corbett, 3rd Baron Rowallan got his marriage annulled by claiming that his wife, April Ashley, a transsexual woman, was not recognized as such under previous UK law.
This argument was accepted by the judge, and the legal test for gender in the UK has been based on this judgement ever since; it had even led to the curiosity of a legal marriage between two lesbians since one had been born male.
