Gender Recognition Bill(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Bill is a response to several court rulings, notably from the European Court of Human Rights and House of Lords, saying that the law as it stands was a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act 1998.
The current precedent dates back to 1963, when ArthurCameronCorbett, 3rdBaronRowallan got his marriage annulled by claiming that his wife, April Ashley, a transsexual woman, was not recognized as such under previous UK law.
This argument was accepted by the judge, and the legal test for gender in the UK has been based on this judgement ever since; it had even led to the curiosity of a legal marriage between two lesbians since one had been born male.
