Chaskalson was a member, perhaps the leading member, of the “technical committee” appointed by negotiators more than a decade ago to oversee deliberations over the constitution.
Chaskalson is not only head of the court, but as chief justice is head of the judiciary.
This was a role the somewhat introverted Chaskalson clearly did not relish, and many lawyers have a sneaking suspicion that he might be leaving just at the time the political temperature on these functional issues, as well as on constitutional issues generally, is set to increase.

Arthur Chaskalson, of course, set a precedent (as he has done in so many other areas of endeavour) when he established the LRC in November 1978.
What arguably motivated Arthur Chaskalson to dedicate his life to the practice of law was a genuine concern that the skills of lawyers are unfairly distributed because they are available to the rich and powerful but are not readily available to the poor or an increasing degree to the middle class.
We are extremely indebted to him and his family, Lorraine, Jeremy, Matthew and family, for their contribution and their unstinting support for Arthur Chaskalson throughout his many years of practice as a lawyer, and his distinguished career as the Head of the Constitutional Court.
